I'm currently working in Korea as an ESL teacher of course, I want to work in Japan after my contract is up. I would like to know if I can apply to work as an ESL teacher in Japan while I'm in Korea? Do I need to go back to the states, or travel to Japan and live there short term? If any one knows the process please send a reply.

why not? For an interview it is much closer to be in Korea than in the US.
Seoul to Tokyo is about 2 and a half hours away by plane, and in the same time zone.
