Five People Found Dead in Motel
SEOUL, March 23 (Yonhap) -- Five people in their 20s were found dead at a motel in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on Monday night apparently from a collective suicide. Police are treating the deaths as suicide, as a half-empty bottle of poisonous material and a note reading "We wish to end our lives and are sorry to our families" were found in the third-floor room.

Thats just weird.. no sense of self... yet strangely self-obsessed, selfish, and collective group-oriented at the same time.

Very odd. Usually people like that just set up a message board for them and their friends.

(says the guy who runs his own message board..)

Police Investigate Internet Link in Latest Group Suicide
The victims, who were all in their twenties, were later identified as Lee, Park, Min, Song and Moon. In the room a half a bottle of potassium cyanide was found along with bottles of beer, soju and soft drinks.

The Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the National Police Agency said that it has taken measures to close down all Korean suicide Web sites and to eliminate the word "suicide" in the search engines of Internet portal sites.

But korea is the most wonderful, advanced nation on the planet. Why would anyone want to commit suicide?

I agree! What could have possibly caused this? I suspect that the impeachment and the shrub have a hand in all of this! Cool

A suicide pact is just one of the strangest concepts! I can't get my head around it.

I try to imagine how they get started.

A: I'm bored and depressed.
B: Me, too.
...
A: It's getting worse. Why don't we kill ourselves?
B: What a great idea! Do you favor pills, bridges or guns?
A: Hmmm...I've always favored bridges. What about you?

I just don't get it.

Typical knee-jerk reaction. Does anyone else see the irony of removing the search term suicide? I can see someone slashing their wrists because they couldn't find the number to the Suicide Hotline.

The suicide rate here is due to the oppressive American occupation of Korea. They are forcing innocent Koreans to try and match up to their capitalist money driven lifestyle.

No, the truth is because the USA invaded Iraq. It's Bushie's fault.

errr, five people are dead lads. They have all left family and friends behind one would imagine. Whatever the reasons for the suicide or the nationalitly of the deceased don't you think it's a tad distasteful to use this case to ram home your political points (albeit with irony).

I'm sure there's plenty of other threads where the same point could have been made more tactfully.

Korea is a collectivistic culture, but we have to be care full, because there are lots of collectivistisms. There are collectivisms grounded in interest groups and ideological relations. There are also collectivisms based on academic, regional and blood ties. Now we have just seen a new one based on wether you want to live or not.

I find that story horrific and bizarre- it's the detail about the soju and beer bottles. They must have all sat around drinking and chatting for a while beforehand, then maybe someone looks at their watch and says
"Anyway we'd better get on with it..."

just sends a shiver down my spine, suicide is such a tragic waste
