The human body just isn't meant to undergo all the abuse those guys subject themselves to. They all take pain killers to varying degrees (aside from "performance-enhancing" drugs).

The film The Wrestler realistically highlighted some of the issues faced by those at the gritty end of the "sports-entertainment" business.

Wrestlers probably need to be unionized like stunt workers in the film industry, but the biggest promotion (WWE) has vehemently opposed any unionizing.

From all reports, Eddie Fatu ("Umaga") was a really good guy who was well liked by his co-workers, fans and management, but he struggled with addiction to pain-killers and was temporarily released by WWE for violating their "Wellness" policy in that regard.

There's some good discussion about him and issues related to his death here http://www.betweentheropes.com/
