I believe this must be tongue-in-cheek for AP...

Quote:
Sunday's arrival of a U.S. president admired for his charisma is already a source of profit and brief fame for some Chinese.

The Chinese have learned English from his speeches and celebrated the way he rolls up his sleeves. Now President Obama is finally coming, and he's being greeted with "Oba Mao" T-shirts and a statue of him that bursts into flames...

"He's so hot right now, so I wanted to translate that through my work," said Liu, who was inspired by the idea of the first black U.S. president...

One Beijing shop owner wanted to see what Obama could do for sales. Liu Mingjie created "Oba Mao" T-shirts, with the president wearing the uniform of the Red Guards, who caused chaos during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.

"It's just kind of avant garde," Liu said of the images, saying they were no longer political, just fashion.

He sold hundreds of the shirts, to both foreigners and Chinese, until authorities told shops selling the shirts to stop.

"They're not allowed to sell these things because there are images of Obama wearing the uniform of the Red Army," a woman answering the phone at the Dongcheng district Administration for Commerce and Industry said Thursday...

How long before some conservative blogger publishes this as 'proof' that Obama is a commie and Glenn Beck tearfully calls again for the armed overthrow of the White House? Razz

Ever since the inauguration a Chinese guy I know has been putting up images of Obama as Mao on his Facebook page.

It's simple but true, and has to be said:

Communism = International Socialism

Fascism = National Socialism (aka "Naziism")

Oba-Mao, by these lights? No, Oba-MUSSOLINI!

I prefer the Obama-Lama to Oba-Mao, but I am sure that wouldn't be allowed in China!

Obama is also enormously popular in Japan.

I've seen a small number of ESL textbooks of his speeches. "YES, WE CAN" is a common english expression that many Japanese people like to say.

But, anyways, I thought it was interesting that the CHINESE are also mesmerized by his speeches. Being the Chinese are some of the most capitalistic people on the planet....like REAL capitalism...no surprise they'd be enamored with an American leader where supposedly capitalism really takes free reign (although it's a much more regulated restricted variety in the U.S.).

Back to Japan & the Japanese & Obama. Apparently the words are mesmerizing to them for one...but also the tone of his voice. Supposedly a recent Obama incarnation sold everywhere here is of his speeches set to music backgrounds that mimic the nature or rhythm of his voice.

We talked about this before, believe me, most people have no idea, neither do they care, about what are on their shirts.

Obama is just a famous fashionable but cheap brand that everybody can wear.

I have no intention to depreciate Mr. Obama though. He is cool and hot no matter where he is...
