I was wondering what other people's experience has been with getting TEFL certification. Is it worth it? I am starting to think what I want to do post Korea, and well I might want to look else where after this. But when I look at job posting elsewhere it all says TEFL. So short of the long if it is this:

If you you have your TEFL where di you get it and is it worth geting if I want to get better over seas teaching jobs?

Definitively, kinda.

I did TEFL international on the beach in Thailand. It was great. It bumped me up a pay grade in the public system too, so it's pretty much paid for it self. If you can see yourself doing ESL for like 3 more years, then I'd say it's worth it. Online seems like a waste of time though.

I got my CELTA in Budapest and it was one of the best times I've had in my life. Higher pay here, I can teach virtually anywhere in the world (so far I've only used it in Korea and Vietnam), and my teaching improved profoundly. It wasn't too expensive in Budapest, the city is great, and the instructors were top of the line. Add to all that the palatial apartment I had up in the Buda hills in among the old decaying mansions and, yeah, it was one of the best decisions I've made.

I don't think a TEFL cert. prepared me for Korean students. TEFL courses will not prepare you for students who are not interested in learning English and working in an environment where it is only important that the students and parents like you.

I consider it a complete waste of $2,500 USD.

Are all online courses made equally? Where did you get yours through?
That doesn't sound half-bad. How long did it take?

I also got mine on the beach in Thailand. Money well spent. Got some classroom and lesson planning experience and met some great people. Taught in Thailand for a few years before coming here, and I'll be heading back there when I've had all I can take here.

http://www.teflonline.net/

This seems to be the most popular online program. They give you a lot of time to finish it, but I finished mine in about 3 weeks.

I'm probably going to do this one: keisie

http://www.koredinco.com/?page_id=19

It's 200,000 Won which is less than the other one (about 170$).

LOL. I did KEISIE just a few months ago and the 100 hour course was merely 50 or 60 USD. Guess they realized they could rake in more dough.

The admins of the site are really great, however, and I would recommend the course for the public pay bump. The whole course couldn't have taken me longer than 8-10 hours, either.

CELTA is the best if you want to do this for a long haul. An online TEFL is marginally helpful but will pay for itself in 1.2 months.

if you've got no experience. It definitely helps. Even if your speeding through it you'll still need to understand the material on some level. And those pointers mean a lot.

It doesn't compare to CELTA but its better than nothing.

OK everyone I am kind of changing the question. What is the main difference between celta and tefl? What are the costs and rewards of both? I want to teach elsewhere eventually so which one is better to obtain? Thanks.
