So, my school has requested that I teach an after school class (1-2:30PM) in addition to my regular winter camp (9-12PM).
My question - is the after school class something I'm 'allowed' to turn down? I work for SMOE. If I say, 'No, I don't think I want to do that,' are they going to refer me to some clause in my contract that I've somehow overlooked? The language is so vague.

If you throw in fifteen minute breaks between 45 minute periods to the morning camp, then yeah... you're sitting pretty at 20 class hours in a week, which is two less than the limit. So technically, they can make you do it.
However, after school classes are usually negotiable if your school is reasonable. If you explain that all of the extra planning for the camp, having the same kids for three hours every day, is stressing you out, they might listen and let you off the hook. |

Thanks for the sarcasm, folks.
I assumed winter/summer vacations were an exception to the 40 hours rule. I don't know anyone required to work above and beyond the call of winter camp (typically, 9-12PM for thee weeks), nor am I aware of anyone who's been asked to sit at their desk for the remaining 4.5 hours of the workday (we're all pretty much off the hook after noon, yeah?). So, when they 'asked' me to do the after school program, I thought, 'I might have some choice in the matter.'

um no. i'm hoping, but the last two years i've been desk-warming 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. oh, the slight exception has been being able to leave at 1pm for 3 days.
if they 'asked' you, i'd give 'declining' a try. see if it works. i think technically they can ask us to teach up to a certain amount of overtime hours, but often your school won't realize this. i've successfully refused afterschool classes before. |

I refused afterschool classes before (I had 22 regular classes) but it was during the regular school year.
I didn't want to do them because I did the math and knew we wouldn't finish a cycle before I left (they didn't know I was leaving yet at that point, but I did!) so I probably wouldn't get paid for them or at best it would be a hassle. I just said I was "too tired". |

Yeah, if it's under 22 hours you gotta do them. It could be worse. I have a friend doing 5 weeks of summer camps, with afternoon classes as well. The school even went as far as to make sure she doesn't go overtime. Justification? She has to be there anyways. SMOE is becoming grander and more sparkling by the minute.

I'm not off the hook after noon, they told me today I'm expected to stay. Also I have to sit in another office on a different floor so that the few other teachers can watch me I guess. I can't even stay in my own office. I think you might have to teach the after school sections, I'm not an expert of any kind so I might be wrong. have you tried telling them that you've saved all your teaching stuff on your office's computer and you need it to work? that's how i was able to stay in my office in the last couple of years. they probably want to watch you, as well as save on heating, but i'd give that a try. it's a lot more comfortable having an office all to yourself. |

That's actually good advice, unfortunately they gave me a laptop and told me to move that with me. There is nothing more uncomfortable then a bunch of Korean teachers staring at me while I work/eat/live. This really seems to be silly and pretty irritating. Why must they watch me, do they think I will steal or try to run away?? Do they know I'm planning my escape?? Oh well off to lunch now, to be stared at and mocked. |

They probably don't want to heat more than one office. |
