Hey, just like the Korean War!

One in Five Women Undernourished

Quote:
Almost two in every 10 women suffer from undernourishment, with intentional starvation being the main cause, according to the latest survey by the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs.

In this year's report, the number of females suffering from osteoporosis was five times higher than males.

I was surprised to read this, but not too surprised. A few years ago I was teaching a class on diet and exercise to a group of young Korean women at the adult hagwon I was working at. As they had signed up for the class, I figured they were interested in the subject and would know something about healthy lifestyle habits. Alas, I was mistaken.

They had terrible lifestyle habits: one only ate a few cookies per day. Another only ate lunch, and a small lunch at that. I couldn't find anyone in the class who had any kind of a healthy diet, and none of them did any kind of physical activity besides walking between subway transfers.

With diet staples like ramyun and odeaeng, and the notion of a physically strong woman being undesirable in the eyes of many, is it any wonder?

That osteoporosis one... so what? Women suffer from osteoporosis more than men everywhere, and considering the lack of dairy in peoples diets here, that just seems like stating the obvious to me. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a bad disease and I feel badly for people who have it, but when I see that line I just think, " yeah? so? what else is new?"

I don't know the K women I work with eat loads of food. There's food all over my office, I'm never gonna get into pre-pregnancy shape again!

Whenever I eat lunch with my co-ts they pile the rice on like a small mountain. When my mom came here she was totally shocked that such small people (compared to Canadians) could pack down so much food.

It's my dream to be reborn as an Asian woman so I can eat like a savage, diet for one day and be amazingly thin.

Actually the osteoperosis is only partially dietary: the other part is the lack of sunlight. Vitamin D is necessary for proper calcium absorption, and considering how much Korean women avoid the sun, their bodies don't produce enough (vitamin D has plenty of other health benefits as well, which is why I've started supplementing with 5,000 IUs a day in winter).

Only 2 in 10 women, according to the Korean ministry. That's about the plastic surgery rate around here, isn't it?

Hence why they are undernourished. White rice is very limiting in terms of nutrients, despite the grand place Koreans give to the empty calories.

I know. They also eat a lot of root vegetables and fruit. Some of them may be a bit unhealthy in their diets. They're still a whole lot healthier than most American women I've known here or back home.

I think the lack of exercise is the biggest problem. If they did any kind of physical activity, they would have to start eating something. I've never seen so many skinny, out-of-shape people in my life. Girls at Ewha Women's University complain about the hills on the campus because they're afraid that walking up them will give them "thick legs." Rolling Eyes

There's a girl at my hapkido school who's built like a brick ####house. She's rock hard and curvaceous. I've seen a couple others like her as well so there are a few.

Being fat isn't the only indicator of fat, though. Yeah, the women here are a lot skinnier, on average, then in the west, but if they aren't getting the nutrients, then it doesn't really matter.

Refined carbohydrates are foods where machinery has been used to remove the high fibre parts (the bran and the germ) from the grain. When a complex carb is refined it loses it complex structure and thus all the properties that made it a healthy choice. Instead it takes on the properties of a simple carbohydrate and is processed by the body in the same way. White rice, white flour, white bread, sugary cereals, and pasta, noodles and pretty much anything made from white flour are all examples of refined carbohydrates. You should stay away from refined carbs, as much as you should stay away from sugar.

Yeah most Korean women I know in their 20s are ALWAYS ill because of something or another.. I don't understand why. I am rarely ill. In fact, I don't remember the last time I went to see a doctor because of a health issue (is a skin rash a health issue?).

i think its just that alot of them dont work out.

my korean friend took me to this bar where they have girls that are paid to flirt with u. i was running my hands over this one and she felt really toned, not the soft flab of most korean woman. i asked her what her hobby was and she said health, which is korean slang for going to the gym.

there are alot of top korean women atheletes, so its maybe that theyd rather starve than work for the look.

Yeah, it is pretty retarded how little they eat. I know of korean girls who eat 500-700 calories a day.
