Hey
I was wondering what laws in Korea are actually racist against foreigners. This includes native speakers and all others as well.
Thank you |

It's not so much laws that exist, it's more about laws protecting minorities that don't exist. |

One example, not a law but a regulation. CitiBank took over a Korean bank (can't remember which one) so some of its procedures were still based on the old Korean bank procedures. CitiBank won't lend to foreigners. The old regulations did actually say that home loans were only for (not Korean citizens or residents) those of the Korean race. This was a few years ago, may have changed since then.
Another example. Sometimes when dealing with government, an official may say "you can't (insert item) because you are a foreigner" when in fact no such regulation exists. Problem then arises because there is no appeal process or process to take action against the individual. |

Regarding military sevice:
Male children of a Korean citizen and a "white" spouse are exempted from national service.
Male children of a Korean citizen and an Asian spouse must serve. |

That's not racism, it's privilege! |

They don't have to serve but they are given the option of serving. Part white males cannot serve |

They're changing the law so that all males have to serve. Personally I think it has to do with the declining birth rate.
Also, interesting thing I was told. Back in the day, if you were the only son for the second generation in a row, you didn't have to serve. But apparently that practice ended in the 80's sometime. So, if you were lucky, you didn't have to serve, but at a price. Supposedly it was difficult to find a decent job if you didn't do your time in the military. |

I don't know of any laws that are specifically racist. The problems I have encountered is that a company will deny services to a foreigner and use the excuse that there is a law forbidding service to foreigners. This is especially true in the banking industry. I have also been refused internet and cable service by two companies. Both cited government policy as a reason for denial of service. |

It is permitted for foreign factory workers to be paid much less than the rate for Korean workers. |

What special laws are necessary to specifically protect minorities? |

Of course foreign factory workers are payed less. Why would the factories even bother employing foreign workers if they had to pay them the same amount as Korean workers? If they had to pay the same amount, there would suddenly be a whole lot less jobs for those foreign workers. |

Could you please tell us where you got this information? I'm very curious since we may be having a son here. |

Korean law literally says that all foreigners are entitled to the same rights as Korean citizens (but in reality they are talking out of both sides of their mouths, because this is not the reality - it is our duty/responsibility to call them on this obvious incongruity!) They should put up or shut up, and one thing that Koreans respond to is public (global) chastisement, especially on a global scale........... |
