So I read the contract. I signed the forms. I ordered the transcripts, the CBCs, the Apostille. I took apart the Windsor frame and sent my diploma across the ocean. I was ready. I was to leave in January. Until yesterday.
Yesterday, the school I signed with called and told me that they can't afford to hire me. After meticulous planning and careful screening, I had chosen this particular school because of its size, location, and teacher recommendations. It blows my mind that after all the effort I put in to finding the right place, this is how it would go down. Of course, I could have actually arrived in Korea before they told me they were breaking the contract...that would have been worse...
But I digress; I am now looking forward and forward is not looking so great. I have turned down job offers here in the US, as well as stopping my research and application to other schools abroad, in reliance on my contract being honored after I mailed it. I am financially and personally committed to teaching abroad, and I am now scrambling to try and find a job that will start around the same time as the previous job was supposed to.
My questions follow:
1. Is finding a job for next month feasible in any way at this point (in Korea)?
2. Are there recruiters that specialize in last-minute jobs?
3. What, what, what can I do about getting my documents back quickly? I realize the sealed transcript is probably worthless now, but the diploma is obviously very important, and it would be nice not to have to send away for another $30 Apostille.
Thanks for your replies. |

1. Yes, now refer to the response to #3, which is listed as #3
2. Yes, and you should also refer to #3 in this case
3. It depends on the place you applied to. They can send it back quite easily, depending on their willingness to do so. The transcripts shouldn't have been opened yet, unless they've gone to Immigration. If everything has been turned into Immigration, you may only get the diploma back.
I would just politely ask the school to quickly return the documents. ASAP |

The big Questions:
Did you get a visa issuance number yet?
Did they apply for your visa yet? (If you have a number, then yes, obviously, but if no VIN then perhaps you don't know.)
If your employer-to-be applied for or obtained your Visa Issuance Number, then the only thing you can get back is your diploma.
If they didn't apply yet, they should be able to return all of your documents to you. You should request that they do so right away.
But, if you want to get another job fast, you should get busy gathering up replacement documents ASAP.
The recession (depression) is still grinding on in Korea. More and more people are gradually slipping into financial difficulties, or recognizing the fact that they are in financial trouble and have been for some time. This means that all private schools and hogwans will be losing students in the months ahead. Many schools, like the parents, haven't recognized or adjusted for their reduced incomes yet. Many will be forced to cut back. It's unfortunate that this happened to you, but others already here will be layed off as well. The bad times of the Second Great Depression are still rollling on. |
