cash in your frequent flyer miles or stay active at least once a year in your miles program.

The miles accumulated from one round trip ticket home can be worth about 100$ in gift cards or merchandise with many programs.

This time of year many airlines have gift cards. I just cashed in my united miles because I hate united and vowed to never fly on them again unless I absolutely have to.

I just got 2 50$ Panera gift cards for 7,000 miles each

I still have Delta, but their merchandise is more expensive mile per mile, and I plan to fly on them again if I can, so I'm saving those miles.

Actually my plan is to take my existing 15,000 miles, get a Delta credit card (no fee) , earn the 35,000 miles, then fly to California again.( I think I paid 425$ total round trip last time. Then I'll have the 65,000 needed to earn an International flight. That will be the real bonus, when I can use that ticket and get reimbursed 1.3 mil each way
