I am again attempting to buy a TV in Korea. I made the mistake of buying an old, massively heavy used TV off Gmarket a few months ago for 70,000 won, and it shorted out and we had to trash it (because of course we only could have gotten our money back if it had broken within 7 days).

We were always super cheap back in the US- we owned an old Konka (yes, that good old Chinese brand) for years. But now I want to have some nice movie viewing and am deliberating over what TV to get (again from Gmarket, I guess- I hope I am not burned again).

I want to buy a TV and DVD player. HD would be nice, and slim (so not too heavy), but only 200,000-350,000 won, as we won't bring it back to the US in a few years.

The Gmarket site is flashy and hurts my eyes. I want to spend as little time there as possible. Can you help me select a good TV, dear Dave's readers? There are too many choices.

Recs on DVD players would be great, too. Do region-free DVD options exist in Korea?

Thanks!

You should just go to a supermarket or Hi-Mart.......pick out the TV and DVD player you like in person.

The price difference between real store and internet won't really affect what you're going to get for 200-350,000......not much!! Really, you won't get anything more than a 26'' LCD widescreen which won't really cut it, even in the smallest living room.

You'll need to raise your budget to over 600,000 to get a decent LCD TV which won't look ridiculously small in your living room.

I agree, I have a 32 inch LG LCD and even that looks too small in my living room.

I feel an upgrade coming along next year Twisted Evil

I'm not trying to buy anything through this site, simply asking for recommendations, and so I would argue that this is applicable to life in general in Korea (General Discussion).

Are you going to be using it for actual TV or mostly watching movies? I mean, how much Korean cable do you plan on watching? Since I get all my TV from the interwebs (both streaming and torrents) I bought a second computer monitor. I think it's about 23 inches, HD and has hook ups for my PS3. Paid about 270k for it. Since I sit about 3 feet away from it, it works pretty well.

Check out any department store or Techno mart. Remember to do some research online though for what price you should be paying so you don't get the ol screw job.

I actually do plan on watching cable TV (not because I love it so, but because it has to do with my graduate research). But I want to watch movies on it too.
