"A speller is allowed to start over spelling a word, but if they change the letters already said, it counts as a misspelling and causes automatic elimination."

so, say one is spelling "APPLE" and says "APL",
then restarting and saying "APPLE" is an automatic elimination?

Unless it's for the World Cup of Spelling cut the kids some slack, I'd say.
