|
|
Hello people:
For those of you who own a prepaid credit card, you know how convenient and cost-saving these pieces of plastic can be. I used to have a PayPal prepaid card way back when they were offering them to non-US residents and I loved it! Now, however, I find myself in a quandry trying to replace that beloved card.
Looking online, I've realized that these cards are primarily avail. to US & UK residents like some kind of national monopolies or something among the banks that issue them. I'm a Canadian living and studying in Seoul. I tried to get one through a Korean bank but it fell through because I don't have the ARC. And when I was living in Shanghai, the C-banks, unfortunately, hadn't even heard of these cards.
Someone, please direct me to a source or offer some suggestions re. how to get another prepaid card over here! Thanks in advance. |

If you are living and studying in Seoul, then you must've been here more than 90 days,
If you are more than 90 days, you should have ARC.
if not, go get one.
Then you should not have problems getting credit card at Korean banks |

I agree with everything JCISML said except the 'getting the credit card' part. I personally asked my Korean Bank rep if I could get a credit card, after having a secured credit card for 8 months with the total balance paid every month and he said it is bank policy not to issue credit cards to foreigners.
I've had a secured credit card the past 9 months. Not exactly like a pre paid card, but it establishes some form of credit because you have to pay the bill every month.
If you are looking for a pre paid card to control your spending, I don't know what to tell you. You could open a separate checking account and request a check card. Then, every month just deposit X amount of won into it as your spending money. The bank books that people use here are great. With that book, you can keep a rolling total of how much you have available. |

This guy came by my school the other day peddling credit cards. I wasn't interested because you have to pay to get the card, and I'm leaving Korea soon anyway. He left his card, and he spoke pretty good english
