The government is telling us that the economic stimulus is working and the recession is over. But you wouldnt know it from looking at the unemployment numbers. While we may have dodged another great depression, unemployment is at its worst since then, having fallen to 10 percent by the Feds own reckoning. And, while we dont like to be the bearers of bad news, we do stand for transparency in reporting statistics. So weve produced an animated infographic explaining who gets to call themselves officially unemployed, and why the government leaves out millions of jobless Americans in their often cited and repeated unemployment rate statistic. So while the economy may be recovering, it might be awhile before many Americans feel it in their wallets |

First you have the "officially" unemployed, or those able to collect unemployment. The percentage of those is about 2 1/2 times what it was 50 years ago in the US. Those are the ONLY people who count in the "10.2%" - the people below aren't included.
Second, you have people who can't collect unemployment, but aren't working and are trying to.
Third, you have discouraged jobless, no longer looking.
Fourth, you have people working part-time who want to work full-time.
Fifth, you have people seriously underemployed in relation to their credentials.
Sixth, you have people in school who, if they thought they could get hired, would be working instead.
Seventh, you have people with various other lifestyles not involving working, who would work if they thought they could.
Categories #2 through #7 are up much more than 150% since 1959. If you doubled the number of good jobs available in America, say those that pay $40K or more with a high percentage of health insurance included, they would get gobbled up.
Not to mention the reverse brain drain of people like us... |

School is definately an excellent way to collect unemployment and get an education at the same time. |

Maybe in the US of A where all the media hype of unemployment figures are.
Most of us on Dave's aren't American though.
The country I came from has a 8.5% national unemployment rate, down to 5% in the bustlin' prairie provinces. There are jobs and people are working. Whether the jobs pay much or are liked very much is another matter. |
