Hello,

I've terminated my contract early and am heading back to Canada. I gave the requested 45 days notice, and was promised by my boss that Id be paid all my outstanding wages before I left.

Problem is, in the past he is continually late with payments. The payments come nearly a month late usually (although they do come eventually). Last week, I asked him if there would be any problem with paying me all my back wages before I left Korea, and he said he would pay me half on Dec 10th, and the other half on Dec 18th (my last working day). He didnt pay on Dec 10th and when I questioned him about it today, he said that he has no money and he can't pay me...but then promised that he would pay in full on the 18th. Im not sure how this money will magically materialize within the timeframe...since he owes me about 3 million...the hogwon as a business is in pretty bad shape.

I simply don't trust the guy. He has been unreliable with paying me and the other teachers at the school, and Im worried that when I leave Korea (on dec 20th) that I will have little or no recourse to recover my pay should he choose to just not pay me (since I will be far away in Canada, out of sight out of mind).

Are there any steps I can take now before I leave to protect myself should he not pay me by the promised date before I leave?? Someone I can contact with before I take off back to Canada just to be sure? Any documents I can get from the school now which could help me legally in the future??

Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks!

search for the thread "how to legally hammer your hagwon boss into submission." figure if 600k won + 1/3d of likely won't result in you losing money--if it won't, pay an attorney to do your collections work (probably want to sign that contract before you leave country) or you can kiss any outstanding wages goodbye
