You can't handle the truth.
The non-conspiratorial answer is: to sell magazines. |

Monetary policy in the early part of this decade was accommodated for good reasons. There was a recession in 2001, there was the jobless recovery, inflation was very low. Keeping interest rates low to get the economy back on track was a reasonable thing to do. I think there are a lot of forces that led to the crisis, a whole range of things were relevant there. I dont think that monetary policy was a particularly important source of the crisis. |

I reckon the purpose, beyond selling mags, is to defend the establishment.

The most significant fact of American political life is that political journalists (of all people) see their role primarily as defenders of, servants to, spokespeople for the Washington establishment. That's how they obtain all of their rewards and remain relevant. The concept of journalists as watchdogs over political power has been turned completely on its head by power-revering servants |

Time has got to be one of the worst offenders. It doesn't matter which party is in power. Some of the most ridiculous Time Magazine covers:

Time person of the year is about as much of an honor as the Nobel Prize. Too bad it isn't you this time, eh? |

Oh, Just Settle Down: Time's warning that devil worship was sweeping the country was short on supporting evidence. While exact figures are difficult to come by, most estimates put America's satanist population in the range of 10,000-20,000 people. |
This is not something that should be shrugged off. If popular fantasy and video games have taught us anything, it's that it only takes a handful of evil cultists to summon their dark lord from the netherworld. Just one lucky sorcerous ritual and a powerful, evil being will arise to destroy us all.
Seriously, though, Ben Bernanke as person of the year? Maybe a few of those cultists were more successful than we realize. This is ridiculous. |

Sounds absurd, right? Yet the spawn of that devil was the spate of Satanic Ritual Abuse cases at day care centers throughout the country in the 80's and early 90's in which pre-school toddlers were supposedly raped and penetrated with all manner of sharp and other objects, forced to witness animal sacrifices and baby murders at places with large plate glass windows visible to the street where parents could arrive unannounced at any time and the children arrived home each day smiling, and for which not all convictions have been overturned and many still languish in prison. Yes, Time is complicit in the child sex abuse witchhunt of which this was one aspect. |

The person of the year should be a picture of an empty, default avatar silhouette, labeled "The Unknown Poster."
It should go out to the anonymous or semi-anonymous people who yell at each other on the internet.
Or to the guy who DOS'ed twitter. |
