It's getting more and more embarrassing whenever there are LOE organised events and I have to associate with my other foreign teachers. How much common sense does it take to know that if you're going to visit a school sit in on a demo lesson you should wear a suit, and at the very least not wear bloody jeans and an old coat? I dread the day that some of those slobs come over to my school and create a new impression of what foreign teachers are like. The same goes for talking twenty decibels more than necessary when Koreans are trying to have a serious conversation nearby. I'd bet some of these people don't even know how to tie a tie or have ever paid for drycleaning in their lives. Perhaps such things should be included in EPIK orientation week?

Dunno where you're working, but in my district, everyone under the age of 30 shows up in jeans, including the Korean co-teachers.

Regardless of what we wear, we are still outsiders in a Confucian society.

I hate wearing slacks. It's a comfort issue (along with my ladies underwear, thank you very much). I wear a suit sometimes, but usually its clean (and neat) jeans, dress shirt, sport coat, and a tie 50/50. The Miami Vice look.

I know what the OP means tho. Dirty clothes, ill fitting clothes, I just rolled out of bed clothes... come on folks, this isn't college.

I agree with the OP here. The Koreans are much more friendly and accomadating if you at least look like you make an effort. Making comments like "we live in a Confucian society" is simply defensive self-justification; it ignores the original point completely. Just admit that you don't want to spend a few thousand won on a non-shiny suit and get over yourself.

Dear Noob....I am sorry that some of us do not measure up to your expecations. I do wear a suit to school most days, but not when I teach the Grade One and Two kids because they get a bit freaked out by it. Sometimes, on my Grade and Two days...I am asked to attend to other duties...and I do so.

As for the talking loudly...my, my, aren't you the most culturally sensitive guy to ever hop off an aeroplane?

By the way...that was tongue in cheek (which doesn't go down to well here).

There are certainly some people who need to dress like they have a job! Also...it annoys me when people talk too loudly as well. Really.

20 decibels too loud?

Sounds like they are just when-in-Roming.

But I hear you on the clothing. They need to bust out the pink sweater/shiny silver slacks (bonus points for purple piping on the sweater).

Most of people looking good wearing that stuffs.

i dont think you have to go so far as a suit, but the OP has a point, i have seen some pretty badly dressed NETs.

torn jeans, old t-shirts, unkept hair, etc, should be a no-no in any job that pays a salary.
