When I give dictation, sometimes, or as part of a quiz, most kids don't seem to understand the way I say "on" (rhymes with "gone" and "yawn"). They are so used to the Korean way of "own"..... from the hangulization of English I guess.

Same with "Madonna" and "harry potter".... we say it differently. A lot of confusion over the short and long "o" (or is that "ah") Wink

I always teach vowel sounds explicitly - short and then long. Another teacher once shared with me a way to teach short vowels by getting kids to associate them with funny actions. The one that worked the best was for the short o sound, which had the kids sing the short o sound like an opera singer with an o shaped mouth.

I hope you find this helpful.
