I was contemplating doing a similar thing on my London-Nairobi flight next summer, but then realized that I'd be there when it's 50 degrees outside so opted for a different flight with a shorter layover.

I was checking out this page for things to do:

Mind the visas... about 28 USD per person.

I had an 18 hour layover in Doha on the way back from Tehran. I was flying Qatar Airways. They paid for my VISA and put me up in a $300 a night hotel with free meals for the 18 hours. I went into town and went to the mall, which I was lucky to find because everything in the city shuts down in the middle of the day and I was stuck outside in 50 degree weather. I had to buy new clothes because I basically ruined the ones I was wearing. The Iranian Bizarre was the only thing interesting there and it was pretty cool. The only other thing to really do in the city is walk around down by the water, which is uneventful.
