What are your feelings on the new Battlestar Galactica series? The original series I have fond memories of (though let's not even talk about Galactica 1980).
Oddly fans of the original Battlestar Galactica series caused some early paranoia about Star Trek the Next Generation. It goes like this. Battlestar Galactica was on its last legs but ABC wasn't telling anyone. Each week, fans would tune in to find a repeat. It was no where near the end of the season so people were confused as to why Battlestar Galactica was running so many repeats in, like, March. Eventually Glen A. Larson managed to wheeze out one more new episode and then the whole thing went into the crapper.
Now fast forward 15 years. Star Trek the Next Generation got into a thing where December and January they ran repeats. The rational was people were busy during the holiday season and would miss new episodes. Many fans of TNG remembered how Battlestar Galactica ran a bunch of mid season repeats before tanking and started to worry the pattern was repeating itself... The TNG makers had to let fans know what they were actually doing. A month and a half of repeats didn't mean they were going to pull a Battlestar Galactica.
Anyway, I've been bit.torrenting the eps. I like that it's a B5-ish story arc. Each episode continues the story. I've always hated normal TV series that seem to treat each episode as if it were unrelated to every other episode. This creates the "Hart to Hart" effect. You remember that show. Each week one of the Hart's best friends was murdered. And no one ever once went "Hey, have you ever noticed being a friend of the Harts is, like, dangerous?"
I think a lot of TV types figure if people can't immediately jump into the series and the characters they'll just never watch it. I came to B5 half way into the second season. It takes a bit of leg work to figure out everything, but that adds an interesting layer of mystery.
The production values are crazy good. It's kind of like Space: Above and Beyond but with a built in audience. The acting is decent enough. The Baltar guy is pretty funny. (The original series Baltar was played by John Colicos. Not only did he play the first Klingon on Star Trek but he was also Canadian and a Shakespearean actor, like Lorne Greene/the Original Adama.)
The stories themselves seem a bit dull so far but there's enough interesting back story, it keeps me hooked.
The worst part of the series, however, is the lame opening credits. Nothing was quite like the original series booming symphonic score.
(Battlestar Galactica was original released as a theatrical film. Fox/George Lucas sued Universal claiming numerous copyright violations. The movie never made it to big screens in America. However, the lawsuit had no effect on the Canadian distribution. Canadians were able to see the movie on the big screen. Universal actually counter sued Fox claiming R2D2 was a copy of the cute little robots in the movie Silent Running.) |

I like it a lot but I miss the old cyclops style cylons. And more battles! Is there going to be a second season? |

I thought Battlestar was excellent.
After you get over the basic changes it was an excellent Sci-Fi story.
Gritty and "Real"
The sound was great ... space is silent ....
Slugthrowers rather then lasers ...
The starboard landing bay was a gift shop ...
Logical "old tech" ... |

I did notice there's been a real lack of space battles. They seem to recycle some early TNG plots. The series needs a bit more action but it's still pretty solid. |

The shaky theology subplot annoyed me, but I did like the political macinations. And the fighers. I'd like Season 2, as well. |

Can you see the new episodes in Korea?
I've been downloading them and watching as much as I can. I never really watched the original much but I totally like this one. (Though as a side note, I have seen the future and it is Canadian! Have you noticed how many Canadian actors are on this and other shows? Not complaining mind you)
The opening music grew on me but I still downloaded the old theme anyways. |

They film it in Vancouver. The Canadian government gives movie/tv producers significant tax breaks to bring their productions to Canada. In return they're required to have one or two Canadian actors in a semi-major role. For example in X-Files, which was filmed in Vancouver, Smoking Man was a Canadian actor. |
