so i am planning out a two week trip and am putting most of my effort in that.

however i also have a separate 1 week vacation that i dont know what to do with. i dont want to spend another 600,000 won plus ticket to a SE asian country. if i just show up at the airport on say, a friday morning, would i be able to find random cheap discounts going to japan or elsewhere?

You'd think so, if you've watched "The Amazing Race".

They just show up, run to the nearest agent and hopefully find the fastest available ticket to Timbuktu. (Of course it's a TV show, they (ticket agents) could have been told in advance.)

I not 100% but I believe you can't get a ticket to the U.S. at the gate because of the new Homeland Security regulations. They (airlines) need to submit the passenger manifest in advance (I don't know 24 hours or so) to get it checked out against the no-fly listing.

I would do some searching on Google and see if it's still possible.

Let us know how what you found or if you try it, how did you do with regards to availabilty, price, problems etc. Good luck.

From what i gather since with all been buiying our tickets online you cant really travel that way anymore. Airlines figure that if you need a ticket at the last minute you will be willing to pay more for it. Could be wrong

Hi,

I guess you could go there. If they will not help you at the counters find the best immediate deal online, then book, or give your travel agent a bit of warning and then call them going to the airport.

I am not sure if it will be cheap to do that nowadays, I guess it all depends on the airline, where and when you want to go....they all tell me that 'stand by' is a thing of the past which means a booking will be needed and that means you could be bored waiting.

On a weekday I would expect it not to be too bad, on a weekend or too close to a holiday it might not work.

Take a book, hello bathhouse..

Good luck

Back in the 60's and 70's standby tickets were cheap. You'd show up at the airport early, buy your ticket for XYZ airline and then wait till a plane had an available seat. However, now a standby ticket is the full fare. Like someone said the airlines figure if you want a seat that same day you'll pay anything for it.
I suggest you try 072.com. It's in Korean but very useful for getting cheap tickets on short notice.

I wouldn't count on it, but it worked for the Simpson's when they went to Japan. Just be ready to push other people out of the way! Very Happy
