KT reps will tell you that Wi-Fi is free only in Korea, this is a lie!!!

If you do travel outside Korea and you want to use Wi-Fi on your iPhone w/o getting charged outrageous data prices, do the following:

To ensure that you are not charged for any data downloads overseas: Make sure you have the latest iPhone software update, go to "Settings", "General", "Network" and make sure the "Data Roaming" is OFF. This turns off the 3G if you're out of your service area.

To confirm if this works, another way to do it if you're the paranoid type, put your phone on Airplane mode, this will disable Carrier Access Very Happy

ONE NOTE!!!! PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE:

Be sure to turn all push notifications, location services, etc etc etc THIS WILL USE THE INTERNATIONAL ROAMING ON YOUR PHONE!!!

Thanks.

I don't know why anyone would believe wifi is only free in Korea. Wifi is wifi and has nothing to do with the service. I use my American iPhone which has been disconnected on wifi in Korea.

That's not what I wrote, KT reps say the wi-fi capability in the Korean iPhone is free only in Korea, so if you go outside Korea we're forced to use data which is exorbitantly expensive.

I have a (possibly stupid) question.

If you use wi-fi, does that mean that you don't have to use your data plan? I'm thinking of getting a Blackberry and the minimum data plan is 35,000 KRW for 500MB (I think).

So if wi-fi is active and I go on the net or download stuff, my data will not decrease?

That's correct. Wifi is free.
