Yesterday, I was working in the office. My phone rang. Some young Korean woman starts speaking very quickly, in Korean, on the phone. I catch a few words and understand something about a delivery. Strangely enough as the call is, I can't help but to think that perhaps my lady ordered something without me knowing. I tell the lady to hold on. I hand my cellphone over to my boss at work.
She then translates for me and tells me that a delivery had come to my house, but it was returned. So, the lady on the phone says that in order for me to receive it, I have to give them my ARC card number, etc. etc. My boss gets very concerned and begins to raise her voice and asks, "why? why do you need these things?" All of a sudden, the phone hangs up.
I was being targeted for voice phishing! Careful, it could happen to you!!!! |

Huh, weird. What could be the damage of your ARC being out there? People creating online accounts with your details? |

They were also asking for my account number, etc. |

I've heard voice phishing is a pretty common scam over here......in particular calls that originate from China (Chinese that speak fluent Korean). |

Yeah, my wife (Korean) got hit up for one of those once, a fake delivery to the post office, we need your information, etc. But she said the person totally sounded like a Chinese-Korean and when she asked why this info was needed, they just hung up. |

Yup, the same thing happened to me a year ago. I had a call on my cell phone that there was a package at the post office I had to pick up (I wasn't expecting anything). I was driving at the time, so I handed the phone to my wife. The guy told her, "Your Korean is very good!" (she's Korean). We both felt something was strange. They said they'd call back (they didn't). When I tried the number that showed up on the phone, it turned out to not exist. |

I think I just got one right now. I just kept speaking in English and they hung up. |

^ Could have been just a sales call. Speak English and they give up quick.
Hey! If you get sales calls back home, try answering in Korean! That should flummox them. |

Why anyone would give personal info over the phone without first having verified the caller/businessis beyond normal thinking. I have had a few calls from immigration over the years asking a question or two and I always tell them..I dont know who you areso I will look up the number and call you back and ask for you when the phone is answered. And No...I am not going to call the number you are giving meI ll get it myself.
Never ever give personal info over the phone. |

I never answer my phone unless I know the number. If it rings more than once I enter the number into a database to see if it's important, if not, block |

We were getting quite a few of these a day at our home when my wife changed our number two or three times. As soon as I'd remember our new home phone number, she'd change it again. I still can't remember my home phone number without looking it up on my cellphone. I answer our home phone in English and they hang up, too. |

Seriously I know they 어 語 in Korean, and I'm nitpicking, but there's no reason to say 'Korean language'. It's "Korean" and "Korean ability". |

I've heard from Koreans that these people do robo-calls -- pre-recorded messages sent out to hundreds of people. Upon receiving the call, the person on the end of the line is asked to verify certain pieces of information by typing things like account numbers, Korean ID numbers, and other personal information. The thieves have set up a pretty good computer system to gather all the information. |
