|
|
My Dell Inspiron power brick went out. I was typing away happily over my morning coffee and pop... not really a pop... just all of a sudden the thing powered down.
I took the cable to a local shop and the guy confirmed that the brick was indeed quite dead. I asked if there was a possible local replacement and he came up with the genius idea of splicing my end cable (the one that actually connects to the machine) with one exiting a Korean power brick... I know it would work but would prefer to avoid the adjoshi-rigged potential fire hazard if at all possible.
Has anyone else found a replacement Dell brick in Korea? What about a 2nd party brick? |

This is a common problem for Inspiron laptops, as well as motherboard issues. This happened to a friend of mine about a month ago - both the power brick and power jack on the mainboard failed at the same time.
He brought it to the official Korean Dell service center and they wanted to charge him 100,000 to replace the brick and 550,000 the replace the motherboard, not including service fees. He needed his files for work ASAP so he ended up paying them.
I later found the same parts he needed on eBay for a fraction of the price - under $30 for the brick, and about $150 for the mobo. He would still have to pay for it to be serviced, but would avoid paying their premium prices for the parts. So I'd recommend you get a quote from the Dell boys and then do some comparison pricing on eBay. |

2nd party brick is out... I think dell is one of the companies that will only run on their own bricks. |

Why didn't he buy a new laptop and put the hard drive in an external enclosure? It would've cost the same and he would have a new computer. |

I did pop his HDD out and plug it into my laptop via external enclosure. BUT... he had password protected his files (windows login password), so it wasn't easy accessing the files from my OS environment. Also tried booting up from his HDD, but we ran into some roadblocks so it wasn't possible. He could access the files one by one if he changed the permission each time, but this couldn't be done as a batch edit or copy and paste. Seeing as he had to have access to tens of thousands of files that he needed for work, he bit the bullet and paid the price.
What's funny is about a week before this happened he was talking about getting a new laptop. Bet he'll never forget to backup his junk again. |

I went to technomart at Sindorim to the 7th floor I think. There is a Dell service center there in the back left corner. I was able to get a new adapter for just over 50,000 won. Cheaper than back home unless you turn to Ebay. |

Speaking of technomart, if you need any peripherals for your computer. There is a guy on the 7th floor, near the escalator, the name of his shop is konglish "welcome".. 웰컨 C&C his number is 206-21-51285 he speaks pretty good english. Not perfect, and he sometimes misses the meaning of what you're saying if you go too fast, but he's far more competent than most I've run into there. So if you're looking for something like an adapter or special cable or something (as I was when I just hooked my laptop up to my TV) go there, he'll probably be able to help you out better than some other places. |
