|
|
Everyone has this perception that electronics and/or SLR camera lenses will be cheaper in asian countries. So when I mention I am moving to korea everyone comments on me getting cheap lenses( I'm a photographer)
Any experience with this? |

No.
Used or new - they're both generally more expensive. Actually the used market is super bad for buyers. If you've got some cash... I'd consider stocking up on some stuff and dumping them when you get there. I sold my 3 year old Nikon D200 for nearly $1000 last year way more than I would've gotten back in the 'States. (This is only true if you post it up on one of the Korean used camera sales websites - not selling to a used camera dealer) |

Everything used to be way more expensive. Now it's just a bit more expensive than back in the US. Things are right at the perfect price where it's cheaper than getting it shipped from home and right below more than you'd be willing to pay for it. I bought one lens from an electronics mall (about $50 more than retail back home), and another lens and other accessories from another teacher (close to the actual price).

Back when the exchange rate was almost 1600 Won to the dollar, it was significantly cheaper to buy the gray market stuff here. Now, not so much.
Even prices in Hong Kong, which used to be a photographer's shopping paradise, aren't much different from what you'd find in the US. |
