I know there are probably countless threads with all of this new information posted, but I'm pretty slammed this semester and have looked around for some pretty specific details and have met little success.
I hope someone who is in a similar situation can help me out a bit.
Basically, I want to renew my E-2 contract at my little college in December. I did it last winter and all the folks at immigration needed was a signed contract and my passport. I hear things are getting stickier this year however. Does anyone know if I will need another criminal check? This will be the second time I've resigned at the same school. What about this degree business? I have an original with me.
As I said, I'm sure this is posted somewhere but my muddled mind can't seem to wade through all of the stuff that's out there right now. Thanks!

You do not need to resubmit a CRC.
You MAY,
IF you used your original degree rather than a copy with the K-embassy certification stamp to get your visa,
need to have your degree verified by the KCUE.

Wait, what? Really?! I've seen the opposite so many times. Please tell me it's true. It would make my day so much better.... |

If you are NOT American and are NOT changing jobs then you do not need to re-submit your CRC. Your previous CRC would have been a check of the national database in your home country and would carry over.
IF you ARE American AND you only submitted a state or local level CRC
THEN you will need to submit an FBI check when you renew, extend, or change your visa status (after Jan 1, 2011).

Sweet! So glad Immigration is thinking logically. One less thing to worry about.
As far as getting the degree verified, I'm assuming this is a once in a lifetime event? Can you verify this Ttompatz? |

Ttompatz, if you're still following this thread, do you know of the best way for a Canadian to get a valid CRC from Korea?
Thanks kindly |

Get it from the RCMP. It takes 4 months but if you have the time, do it right and save yourself any grief later.
The new CRC rules don't come into play until Jan. 1 AND unless you are changing jobs you won't need one for a simple extension of your current status of sojourn.

Immigration says it is a one-time event BUT remember than changing your visa is the same as a first time visa so take the one-time thing with a grain of salt.
Having said that, if you do make a trip home in the next few years, spend an afternoon and get a few copies certified by the Korean consulate in Canada. They are $3 each and last forever. 10 copies should take care of all your future visa change requirements. I have used K-consulate certified copies (from 2002) as recently as this past spring with no trouble from immigration.

Unless you hear from immigration that local police checks are good from Canada, get the RCMP check with fingerprints. I know some people are saying that local checks use the national data base but many local police checks like my previous one also comes with a side note that says
*Please be advised that if the above mentioned person were ever convicted of a summary conviction in a jurisdiction other than the province of New Brunswick that conviction would not be found in our search" and continues "was not fingerprinted, that conviction would not be disclosed in our search."
This search was also conducted using local police force records management system (RMS) and provincial justice information system (JIS) and the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC).
So I don't know if immigration overlooks this fact when they read your local police check or not. Why wait? I've sent off for an RCMP check a month ago just to be safe. Maybe you should too rather than rely on wishful thinking. |

I have a feeling that the RCMP check needs to be done, and I'm gonna send for it this week, though if it has a 4 month turn around I won't get it in time, as such I guess I'm screwed (my visa expires Jan 15th).
Anyways, I was wondering if you could tell me where you got the fingerprints done, and since I've never tried can you just get international money orders from the local postal offices here in Korea just like back home, or do I need to go to a bank for that (so I can pay the $25 fee for the background check)? And last thing, on the RCMP page it says it only sends the result out by regular mail, doesn't that potentially add to the ridiculous wait time as well? Are you having them send it directly to you in Korea, or are you having them send it to a middleman who'll courier it to you from Canada?
I wonder how many people have only found out about this this week, I know I only got the official letter from SMOE today (and it's still ambiguous as to whether or not my previous CBC is sufficient.) I called the immigration call centre, and not surprisingly they had no idea, but it sounded like the local police checks are insufficient.
:edit: one more question, does anyone know if this CBC will also need to be verified by the Korean consulate in Canada? i.e. do I need to have it sent to family in Canada so they can have it notorised and then forward it to me? |

I'll take the risk and post this anyway. I'm sure I'll be hammered for it.
The thing is, if I have to get more docs then maybe I don't want to play here anymore. I've been here a long time and every year I have to jump through more hoops to keep my visa.
This is the way I feel now and maybe this will change. I'm just tired of every year having new regulations.
My school is as good as it gets and but it may not win over this one. |

I phoned immi about a month ago in regards to this. I did the federal CRC through Ottawa back in Feb 2009. All I will need is my original diplomas verified by KCUE. This is supposed to be done by the employer. |

I guess you could still try. Send it by courier yourself and it arrives in a week. It is possible to get them back in 3 months. If that doesn't work, you could always get a ticket to Vancouver and do the electronic fingerprint check, which takes 2-3 days for the results. It would be a short vacation and a bit expensive but it is an option.
Finger prints can be done at some police stations but not all. Some are big and some small. The big one in Yongsan does them but it is a little hard to find unless you have navigation.
You can get certified checks made up in banks for the 25$ payable to the Director General for Canada I think it is. (may check the name though). I guess if you get it sent to someone else in Canada and than express to here that would be faster but I wasn't in a rush.
Your CBC can be verified at the consulate here. You just fill out a form saying it is real and they stamp it. |
