|
|
OK so I have two weeks of vacation in January and I'm looking to go somewhere between the dates of the 19th and 23rd.
I would take a longer vacation but I'm sort of on a budget because of those darn school loans.
I have 4 places in mind...Singapore, Phuket, Hong Kong, Guam
I'm not sure about Guam because although I would like to visit there, I really would like to visit another country/culture while I'm over in this part of the world. My budget is around 500,000 W for a flight and another 5-7 hundred thousand for spending money/hotel and place to stay.
Opinions or tips? |

Then cross Guam off your list as being too American (assuming you are American or wishing to avoid similar Anglo-Western culture as your background), cross Hong Kong and Singapore off your list as being too international cosmopolitan, more like whatever major city back home than like a different culture.
Go Thailand. Oh sure Phuket is a tourist trap, but it's a pretty nice cage to be in, and is EASILY escaped to the nearby mainland by cheap local transportation. Traditional Thai towns are a hop, skip and jump from the island, and you will surely get a healthy dose of a very appreciable culture. |

yeah that's the thing though. I would like to go to Phuket...finding a decently priced place to stay is not the problem, it's the flight cost. I would like to find some flights for around 500,000 won from Seoul to Phuket but finding no luck in doing so (can only find 800,000+ for the dates I want to go)
That's why Guam is on the list even though it may not be as culturally attractive as say Thailand. I found some good recommendations for places to stay there as well.
Meh...guess you can't win em all...I have to compromise at some point with either one...all I know is I want a beach!! I'm freezing my you know what off today and heading to a nice warm place has got to be the choice. |

| Ever think about going to Vietnam? It's pretty cheap there and the culture is a lot different from other Asian countries. But you do need a visa though, so that might be costly... |

| The Philippines. I booked a flight about a week ago from Incheon to Manila on Cebu Airlines for less than $300. Time is running out on deals though. Some places down there have hotels for less than $20 a night. |

| I'd suggest Philippines as well. If not, HK is the best choice out of the ones you listed. You can do the Macau thing too. |

Singapore. Completely different culture. In fact, 3 cultures. There's some fairly cheap hostels (by developed country standards) in Little India, which is also a great neighborhood. If you like eating, Singapore is the place for you. Eat at the hawker centres, sampling all the local stuff. It's cheap, too.
It's super easy to get around and is scam-free. Locals are very respectful of foreigners, almost none of the 'waygookin' or 'farang' crap. Yes it's a big cosmopolitan city with a fair bit of ugly housing blocks, but it has plenty of charm |
