So, I work at a pretty decent hagwon now. I started in March, but I told them I wasn't renewing because I will be working at a University next year since I will also be attending one and need more free time in order to take classes and do homework. I told them I would actually be leaving one month early, because I need to go home since I haven't been there in over 3 years. It was all good with me and the hagwon. I gave them plenty of notice, and the school doesn't do airfare or severance anyways. There aren't set sessions, so I wouldn't be leaving in the middle of one.

On friday, I was informed that they found a new teacher, but she wants to start in January. This wasn't done out of malice, but it kind of screwed me. I purchased my flight home the day before, and now I find out that I'll have one month less pay. I also have to pay rent for the next couple of months before my first university pay check comes. I can make the money I have stretch out for a bit, it will be very very tight, and this will make paying tuition a bit interesting.

My best option, I figure is to do a winter camp in January. One school contacted me, and it's for most of January in the middle of nowhere.

The fun part though will be navigating immigration during this time. I need to get my visa transferred to the university, and add an additional workplace for my current visa in the next two weeks while teaching intensive classes, since I'll be in the middle of nowhere for the next month presumably.

Really... for me that would have stopped me there. I wouldn't have signed on. Sounds like these guys are cheap skates.

There's a difference in salary which compensates for the lack of perks.

Severence is the law, unless they pay into a private pension plan. If they don't, they owe you about 2.8 months pension and one month for letting you go early. You give notice...you are following the contract. If they turn around and get rid of you a month earlier then they are screwing you and breaking the law.

Your great hakwon sounds like a pile of Ddong to me:)

Other than letting me go early, the school has been great. Yes, there's no severance. They were up front about this though. They mentioned it in the interview, and everything in my contract has been adhered to. My pay has always been on time and in full. My insurance has been covered. Over time has been optional and paid at a decent rate. My usual class load has been under 20 hours.

I'm annoyed by this latest move, but I can understand it. They recruit by word of mouth rather than through recruiters. The person they want to hire wants to start as soon as possible. This may be a load of bull, but I doubt it.

Anyways, I just hope I can get all of my immi stuff sorted out in a timely fashion.

Of all those things, only the class load is not legally mandated by law.

I know you seem O.K. with it...but the thing is if you hadn't planned on leaving early, you would have been shafted, because severance is a legal right you have under Korean law once you finish the 12 months. The school does not have the power to deny severance. Labor law trumps contract clause.
Just a heads-up for your next contract anyway.

Severance has nothing to do with pension, private or not. Those are two different things.

Oh I understand this. I know that pension and severance are legally required. I agreed to the contract anyways and have done fairly well at this school. I am more than happy with the conditions under which I've worked. Personally, I prefer working under conditions where I pay for my apartment, don't expect severance or a flight. That way, I have a lot more power than if I'm waiting for the end of the twelfth month. If the school had done anything to make me want to leave, I could have left with out any major difficulties.

Anyways, looks like I don't need to worry about a winter camp. I talked to them today and have arranged to stay for a few more weeks.
