I came here to work for CDI about a month ago but after training and my first week in class, decided it wasn't for me and quit(long story behind this). I came here on a F4 visa so I figured I wouldn't get deported for not fulfilling my 1 year contract duties. I paid for my own plane ticket and CDI didn't give me anything for my training week or 1 week of work, I thought they wouldn't come after me since they basically gave me nothing...

Turns out they want me to pay for the 1 week they had me in their hotel room. 280,000W, It's a bill that I can afford to pay but I hate CDI for what they made me go through in the two weeks I was with them. They expect me to pay for the bill but they probably haven't even considered paying me for my 1 week of training or my 1 week of work.

Do you guys foresee any consequences for me if I refuse to pay the hotel bill?

If you worked for them one week, it's a simple mathematical problem:

They owe you. So screw them.

H: you owe us 280,000
T: ok, later

H: you didn't pay us 280,000
T: ok, later

H: why you don't pay 280,000? I make sure you never come to Korea again.
T: ok, later

H: zzzzzzzzzzzz
T: new job

Sounds simple enough. Thanks guys.

Only real concern I have is if they'll contact some sort of agency that'll stop me at the airport when I do finally decide to leave Korea. They don't have my Korean address or phone number but they do have my passport number so that worried me a little.

They would have to know when you were leaving. Chances are, you are better off moving into a hotel or something like that before leaving. That way they can't track you as easily.

That though is paranoia in motion, and I wouldn't worry about it.

Is the hotel bill in your name? Your name, you pay. Their name, they pay. Simple.

There is no way anybody can enforce the payment of another persons bill.

I didn't give the hotel any credit card or banking info, it should be under CDI's name. What difference would it be if they knew when I was leaving or not? Couldn't they just put up a notification on my passport number and just stop me when I show my passport at the airport? I don't plan on leaving for a while since I already have another job here but when I do eventually leave, I'm worried that they'll have some sort of measure put in place to stop foreigners with outstanding debt from leaving this country. Anyways, here's the actual email they sent me:

Dear XXXXX,

Your school needs you to pay for the hotel fees you incurred during training since you are no longer working there. Below is the banking information and the amount due. Please email me once you have submitted the payment.

Thank you.

TOTAL: 288,750KRW

Account # of Coatel : XXXXXXXXXXXX [Woori Bank]

Best Regards,

Even if you thought you owed them for the hotel, they owe you for the one week of work. They don't pay for training (and it should state as such in your contract), so you won't get anything there.

Does the contract say anything about paying back the hotel if you quit?
Was the hotel in your name? (easy enough to check that)

If the answer to both of those questions is no, then they can't "make" you pay. Regardless, they still owe you one week. If they keep bothering you, you should remind them of this fact.

There is nothing they can do other than just whine about it and send you nasty text messages at 4am. Someone else posted what it takes to get detained here at the airport and I believe it was something along the lines of 10,000 US in court enforced fines...not freakin' CDI whining about a hotel bill and unpaid photocopies.

Seriously, don't stress. If they booked the hotel it's their bill to pay.

lol...screw them.

Where's the proof? If someone pays for my room...that's a gift. I'd take them to court over your weeks wages. There is proof you worked there for a week correct? There is no proof you stayed in their hotel.

Send them a bill back. For your one week worked. Maybe they will get the hint.

Forget about paying the bill till they pay you. Demand your weeks wages, minus the hotel bill and consider the affair a learning experience.

To whom it may concern,

Thank you for notifying me of the charges I am responsible for. To simplify matters, please deduct the amount of 288,750 Won from the amount you owe me for one week of work. Please email me once you have submitted the payment.

Account Number XXXXXXXXXXX

Kind regards,

+1

The way to handle any demand is with a counter-demand. They're not going to hire a paralegal to hunt you down for 280k won (not worth it) and besides collections in this country can be quite difficult. Tell them to stuff it, and that they owe you.

It looks to me as though the CDI outfit owes the OP pay for two weeks work.
