|
|
Hi there,
I have now been working for SMOE for a couple of years and its been fine, but something has come up and I am going back to my home country. I have to be back by March so I plan to hand in my one months resignation at the end of January so I would finish at the end of February. If I work until the end of February then I would have worked over six months and would not have to pay back the airfare. However, if I hand in my resignation in the 5th month, is it possible for SMOE to fire me after I have handed in my resignation just before the six months is up so I would have to repay the airfare. (I have a perfect record at my school, received no warnings or anything of that nature.) Now the school has been fine and I would rather give notice then so that they had time in the winter vacation to replace me.
Does anyone have an answer suggestion, I would appreciate it thanks. |

| Why take a chance? When you want to go home just say somebody in your family died and you need to leave tomorrow. Many a teacher has been burned by giving proper notice. The school will get along without you even if it takes them a while to find a new teacher. |

| Right, thats what my gut tells me. But I was wondering if you hand in your 30 days notice can they just then fire you? I know they should give you 30 days but in lieu of that can they just give you your pay and send you on your way? |

| I'm going through a similar dilemma. I want to leave beginning of March also due to personal circumstances and not my job. My school is great to me and I want to get a good recommendation. I want to give them 30 days notice also and since they haven't screwed me in the past, I'm assuming they won't but... |

| GEPIK requires 60 days notice. SMOE requires just 30 days? Check your contract, just to be sure! |

Yes, SMOE requires 30 days prior written notice before resgnation according to my contract. Hope I don't get screwed over in spite of that! |

| i'd agree about saying someone died or something. maybe say someone is ill and you gotta take care of them. then work out the month. i say this as if you've been there a few years surely they owe you some severence pay that has been building up? am i right? |

Not the same dummy. Leaving after the six month mark is not "screwing" your school, it's following the contract. However, being fired for resigning is a breech of contract. |

You signed a ONE YEAR contract, not a six month one. Why not be a professional about it instead of screwing your school over?
Ill tell you what, when im the boss of smoe/gepik, thats the next thing to go.
Heres what ill do: either a) cut out the free flights altogether. You monkeys want a job, you can pay for it yourselves. Or b) if that doesnt work, ill give you your flight reimbursement at the end of your contract. If you resign you lose you it. If youre however sacked in the 6 month - 12 month period, you still get it. If its found that schools or boes are conveniently sacking people in the 5 month period, theyll be sanctioned. Im a hard but fair chief of epik.
Its coming, and its thanks to people like you.
So, thank you.

You're not an indentured servant. The terms of most PS contracts state you do not have to pay back airfare after 6 months and that you must give 30-60 days notice. when resigning. There is no legal or moral imperative keeping you at the school for the full 12 months. Following the terms of the contract is not "screwing" your school.
You must be Korean? You display the same disregard for contracts that is fashionable amongst some hagwon owners.
EDIT: I have completed all the contracts I have signed in Korea. I'm three months away from finishing contract number two at the same school. |

Youre right, and theres nothing that stops you from leaving months 1 - 5 either. But conveniently you decide at month 6 you have a family matter. You mark my words, its next. |
