I was just informed by my k-teacher that the school will be closed X-Mas eve. I informed her that I am required to work and I can not afford to lose a day's pay. Her response was she had to speak with my other k-teacher. With all this Gepik holiday BS going on,what do you think will happen? Confused

I thought there was a thread that discussed how our(Western teachers) contracts were not the same as the Korean teacher's contracts? Plus, I am just waiting for the k-teacher to say I have to type a report or something to that manner, because I am being given an extra day off. Rolling Eyes

Then what does YOUR contract say? If it says you don't get paid for random days off, then you probably don't. I have never heard of this though. Why don't you try asking your ko-teach or Principal?

My contract states that I get off 20 days vacation not including weekends and 15 sick days and Government holidays. Fine, but I should not be required to be off with no pay. Let me stay with the night guard or someone else. Is there anyone who is off and what is there school doing for them? Confused

You should get paid. You will probably have to submit something to show that you were 'working'. I have already submitted my papers for Thursday...I just gave my co-ordinator some old lesson plans and she was delighted.

Enjoy the extra day off you lucky dog!

Oh...and just to edit...you should relax and see what your teacher says before you get too worked up! They might be perfectly reasonable!

Thanks! I do not want to sound negative and please do not take this the wrong way,but if they tell me I am off without pay....how do I handle the situation. I am their first Western teacher. Thanks again.

No worries.

If they tell you that it is a day without pay, suggest that you should follow the same model as the Korean teachers. They should be alright with that. If not, then tell them to contact GEPIK directly. If they tell you that GEPIK says otherwise then contact your GEPIK Regional Rep. If you don't have Dr GEPIK...send me a PM with your location (not too specific, eg "Suwon") and I'll let you know their contact details.

They should be able to work it out! Good luck!

You shouldn't have said that you need to work. You should have asked if you will receive a full month's salary. If the answer was no, then you take the next step.

agreed. as you yourself said, you're their first foreign teacher. they probably didn't know what to do with you and might've just treated you like a korean teacher in respect to the extra paid day off. now they've started asking questions.

This was my situation back in August. The school was closed for several days and my co-teacher told me it was a serious problem and that I wouldn't get paid for those days off OR that I would have to sacrifice more of my vacation days in consequence. I told them that I wouldn't be re-signing, that I loved the school, the teachers, everyone, but that I could live without such a contract. Things changed around dramatically and things are a lot better now. A lot. Mountains can be moved.

I'm off xmas eve. But I'm on vacation.

OP. Your school has 2 options.
1. Either they make you come in and sit on your ass and do nothing, and you get paid.
OR
2. They do the decent thing let you take the day off, (without losing a vacation day) and you get paid.

They are within their rights to do either, and unless you want to waste a vacation day, understand that no. 1 is a very probable option. But, you will get paid.

PS. In my 2 years, my school has ALWAYS chosen option 2, but, with new regulations cracking down on schools who give their teachers extra vacation/days off, I'm not sure how it would play out now.
