Not that I have anything to hide, a couple of tattoos and a couple of surgeries (one elected, one not) and a medical allergy, but I'm not sure I want my boss to know my complete medical history.

Is it basically just used to screen out those with HIV, AIDS; etc?

What about pregnancy? Would that be reported? (Not pregnant now, but will be trying in the summer)

Do you need a new medical check every year or just if you change employers?

Not very. Many people will be able to see and share your info in Korea.

Darn. That stinks. And I suppose what's on your medical check can be held against you as far as hiring goes?

On the up side I suppose no one will try to give me sulfur like they did in Peru, despite being told that I was highly allergic.

The medical check is a screening for some illnesses (TB, AIDS, you probably don't have anything they're looking for) and drugs (5-panel, I think).

In Korea medical confidence is a concept that does not exist. Your health insurance is tied to your employment. Friend-of-friend is head teacher at a noteworthy K Uni. One of her employees went to see a shrink. Shrink called head teacher. That's the level of privacy you can expect here.

That's incredibly disappointing. Sad

When I did my check here, my co-teacher took me to a local hospital where they spoke almost no English. They sent the completed report to her and we were supposed to take it in to immigration at the end of the week. On the test I had a slightly elevated blood pressure, I attributed it to the stress of moving to a new area and school and all. By the next day the whole school knew and was commenting on how I should watch my "condition". Rolling Eyes

My employment medical was done with another new native teacher in another local school. 3 days later my co-teacher went to the hospital to collect my results and also the other native teachers'. (her co-teacher and mine were friends) so made an arrangement regarding the collection of her results. I was waiting in the car and she came with the envelopes open and then spoke to the other co-teacher on the phone about them. She gave me both papers meaning i could see the other teachers' test results quite openly.

If by confidential, you mean that the staff will talk about your medical history in a hushed voice, then yes absolutely!

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. No.

Thanks for giving me a good laugh. Almost as priceless is the look of utter dis-comprehension on the face of the Korean you try to explain the concept of medical confidentiality to.

You can be certain that every detail of your record will be discussed with every co worker and some students and parents.

I'd be surprised if it's not posted on some random Korean discussion forum.

Are you doing a medical check once you get here in Korea? They are pretty basic and for the most part reveal little...eye test, cholesterol, blood pressure, drugs, HIV, height, weight, hearing and thats about it. I had to hand a copy of mine over to my co-teacher to send to the provincial office so yea medical privacy is pretty much non existent.

I think its just HIV/Aids and drugs that they care about. Everything else most likely gets a pass.

If you get flagged for any of the above, you wont be in Korea long enough to worry about the repercussions.

Some teachers at my PS were discussing mine over coffee a couple of years back. Apparently they were all trying to guess my blood-type. I think even the stamp "HIV antibodies negative" or whatever it said worried some of them.

There's not much of a private life in Korea. There's no life/work differentiation and this is especially true for teachers. It applies equally to Korean and non-Koreans although people will obviously be more curious about a foreigner's stats.
