Because I like to do special things for my students, I planned and paid for a Chritmas party thinking it would brighten everyones mood during this gloomy cold snap. Since I dont have an oven and my coworker does, I asked him if he would mind roasting the turkey for our little party. It was agreed that I would purchase the bird and stuff and prepare it and all he had to do was pop it in the oven for 3 hours.

So last night we had the party with a few coworkers and about 30 kids. I had slavishly sought out ingredients, scouring the streets of Itaewon and even making a trip out to Pyongtaek to obtain some fresh sage for the stuffing.

I had cranberries, which no one ate. Mashed potatoes and gravy. (The potatoes all disappeared but only a brave few took a dollop of gravy.) The pearl onions, the cucumber salad, the tri-colored coleslaw and the Paris Baguette dinner rolls were about half finished. The candy canes, fudge brownies and 3 boxes of donuts were all gone in minutes.

But the topper? The turkey, piled-up in a shapeless gelatinous mess, sat in the middle of the table looking like yesterday's dog barf.

What did you do to the turkey?

Turns out my coworker got lazy, asked his mother in law to cook it, so she took it out of the roasting pan I had paid for, placed it in a big old pot and boiled it on high for 3 hours --- stuffing and all.

I barely slept last night thinking of the poor kids who probably think Christmas is something to avoid in the future. My coworker shrugged it off as if it was no big deal and now I am left wondering if his actions were neglectful enough for me to raise a fuss at work.

Should I make my co-worker pay for the turkey?

Yes.

My friend's maid put his business suit in the washing machine, and he made her pay for that. Same thing.

Next time, just get a cooked turkey with all the fixings and side dishes from Dragon Hill Lodge, it's way easier.

And then eat it with your foreign friends. Treating Koreans to western food that you prepare yourself is almost always a complete waste of your time, money, and effort.

you should have been there to cook it, why expect someone to cook something they never have before in their lives the right way.

I'm surprised she had a pot big enough. I would never trust another reason with my own Christmas party dinner. I can't say I'd have much faith in a Korean young ajeoshi either.

I agree

Why would you expect someone that has probably never roasted something before to successfully roast a turkey?

I should have added that the man is a middle aged Canadian from some backwater hamlet in Alberta. He knows how to roast a turkey, that was never a question. And as I stated, I don't have an oven and he had agreed to roast the thing weeks ago.

I don't blame his Korean mother in law at all. But I think the guy should at least have the decency to reimburse me for the turkey.

I'd say its your fault for leaving something important for someone else to do.

Did you even make sure your coworker had an oven big enough for the turkey? Most Korean "ovens" are simply broilers used to cook fish. I don't know a single Korean who owns an oven large enough to cook a turkey.

You are asking a Korean to cook a turkey. If you haven't noticed, not many Koreans eating turkeys.

So, you are at fault. YOu should eat the costs.

Wow...I didn't think this thread would be so interesting but it is.

On the one hand, you probably should have cooked the turkey yourself. Koreans really don't eat it and it's a pretty expensive, time consuming thing to F-up.

On the other hand, the guy should have ASKED you to come over, not give it to a person who has even less experience cooking it.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP HE'S FROM CANADA!!!???? Make him pay for it! Seriously, he should know better!

Edit2: Also, you should really avoid wasting good Western food on Koreans, and the older they are the worse your disappointment is going to be when they waste something you KNOW is good by saying "it's too greasy" or "this beer is too strong" or even "it's too spicy". Unless you're trying to schmooze, just don't waste good food on Koreans older than 30.

Nice that you were doing it for the kids, but that's a warning to any newbies.
