Hey all,

I've just been offered a job in Seoul working at a Korean company and wondered how many non-teaching expats there are. I know Korea is not a finance centre compared to other Asian cities, and there are a lot of teachers, but are there other non-teachers to connect with. Not that I have anything against teaching (I did the JET Programme in Japan a few years ago), it is just a different kind of person does teaching vs. working in a corporation. What other jobs do people do?

You get all kinds here in Seoul. I do lecturing, but also do coaching, counseling, folk-singing, acting, among other things.

How many non-teaching expats? Well, you could count the number of E-7 visas (I believe that information is available online) issued, but I believe some working in international schools get E7s as well, and I believe most of them are teachers.

In any case, there are a few around here. I work in IT. It's not that easy - but it's interesting! A solid knowledge of Korean will help immensely. Lacking that, if there aren't other foreigners working with you, you'll feel pretty lonely, isolated, and ultimately out of the loop.

Try joining the Xing seoul group. There's a bunch of us that gather now and then.

Marketing Manager at a Korean electronics corporation. E-7 visa.

I read and write basic Korean. Grammar is a little sketchy. I don't
feel out of the loop at the factory at all. Most fellow managers speak
English. We use a weird mix of Korean/English/Tech speak.

I feel out of the loop socially. I have almost nothing in common with
the English teachers I bump into.

Itaewon in Seoul is good for meeting expats who are not teachers (lots
of engineers and pilots). Also some of the embassy clubs are good for
meeting people in similar lines of work.
