The skinny how? Like, what they are looking for specifically or how to do it?

What they look for is any form of drug, sex or violent crime, so if you have, say, a 5 year old reckless driving charge like I did, you will be fine most likely. As for how to do it, well, in Washington state in America, I got my prints taken at my local cop shop, sent the print card to the FBI with a letter and fee explaining what I wanted done and why, about 3 or 4 weeks later I got the card back with a stamp on the back and nothing else, which I then got notarized and apostiled before sending it to the ministry of education here along with my other documents.

This is all stuff you can find at just about any recruiter website even if you don't use a recruiter, though, so I'm not sure if you already know all this or not. That's pretty much all there is to it. Hope it helps.

In Florida, you just go to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's (FDLE) website and print out this form https://www2.fdle.state.fl.us/cchinet/_docs/CrimHistInfoRequest.pdf

Enter your information and send a $24 money order or check and you will receive a notarized copy of your criminal background check in five business days. The apostille only takes four to five business days and is $10 http://notaries.dos.state.fl.us/notproc7.html . Simple and fast.

Here in Virginia it was super easy.

Fill out the little request form on the VA state police website, print it out, get it notarized, mail it with a money order for $15, and then wait about a week or so for them to mail it back. The document they send back is notarized by them, so just pack it in with whatever else you need to get an apostille and ship it off to the state registrar with the proper request form and a money order for $10/document and wait some more.

It's good for 6 months (though I've seen it mentioned a couple of times recently on this site that has changed to 3 months so I don't know if that's accurate or not).

IL is harder than before

Go to the Dept of State website.

Order a form and have it sent to an IL address.

Have someone fill it out and pay the 16 usd.

Make sure they notarise it. I've had to send mine back a couple of times, despite having my mom, put PLEASE NOTARISE and highlight that.

Get it certified at the county you're in, yep, that's right, can't send it to the Sec of State wihtout getting the notary certified.

Then send it to the Sec of State.

WIth the incompetance, and sending things back, it takes at least a month.

If you try to go the FBI http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/fprequest.htm route, as Aelric suggested, things have changed:

Quote:
Allow 8-10 weeks for processing, upon receipt to the FBI.

What You Will Receive

No Record Response. As of 8/17/09, fingerprint cards are no longer being returned. Due to concerns related to the protection of Personally Identifiable Information, the process has been changed to return a letter which states "no FBI arrest was found". Any question regarding this matter should be directed to the Customer Service Group at 304-625-5590.

FBI Identification Record. As of 7/7/09, fingerprint cards are no longer being returned with the FBI Identification Record.

In my case, it really did take them longer than 2 months. Also, they would not accept my Korean credit card for payment so I had to get a US money order sent. In addition, they sent the response to my mother's address - which has been the same for more than 25 years - and said it was "returned to sender." I find that unlikely since in my mother's small town, every postman in the town knows who she is and where she lives. I communicated about this with someone (who was obviously a non-native English speaker) at the FBI by e-mail, and she eventually suggested they mail it to me directly in Korea. That was 3 months ago and the CRC has never arrived.

The moral of the story: You will probably be better off going with a state check if it is at all possible.

Also be aware of the dates. Those things expire. Six months plus one day may be the difference between getting your visa, or getting it kicked back. Check your local consular general's office for details.
