You Guys seem depressed about your lifes relative to the expats from Taiwan.

I'm curious as to know what it is, is it because of the society, the people that go to korea, the food, the climate.

Either way, from these forums I see a very love/hate relationship with Korea. Don't see this as often with the Taiwan forums. It's like you guys get pissed but at the same time you can't get enough.

Anyone care to defend themselves? Very Happy

It's a nation of extremes. Even the locals characterize their own feelings as such (e.g., Won-bok Rhie's history and culture graphic book Korea Unmasked). Feelings are intense here all around.

Never boring. Smile

Its hard to defend I guess. .

maybe some people are drawn to a challenge.

I'd never recommend it to anyone though.

My friend once told me that "Taiwan is just like Korea, only it's warmer, the food is better and the people are nicer." I think he was right.

I've been to Taipei twice and hated it. It rained nonstop, things were expensive, nobody knew any English, there was nothing to do. Maybe I didn't give the city a chance, but I didn't see how anyone would prefer it over Korea, imperfect as it is. Are there other parts of the country that are genuinely more pleasant that I'm missing? There's a fellow on here who lives in the southwest who describes palm trees and beaches, but I just can't tell if he's serious or funnin'.

I think another reason there is so much more negativity here is that there are numerically so many of us. Korea is Fort MacMurray for liberal arts students. There's just a greater chance that there will be a number of us who are unhappy here.

Taipei's not bad. It's more international than Seoul. There is a fair bit of English spoken there, more than Seoul (except Itaewon). It's damn congested and crowded though, a small city just blocked with people, scooters, cars, a few areas a bit less hectic. Good food, people are nicer, they treat you normal, not much surprise or reaction seeing whitey there, more international businesspeople and lots of EFLers. Terrible beer! Lots of roaches.

Most visitors to Taiwan seem to only see Taipei. Much of the island is really beautiful, but not inside the main cities. Concrete jungle.

What I've learned is that some of the most miserable people whining on this board are those that are "stuck" in Korea. Some are nutjobs who realize they are unemployable back home. Others are debt runners who have made a decision never to go back. Consequently, they feel trapped and are much more vocal about their hatred of Korea. Whereas the average NET knows that Korea is a temporary stop and is more relaxed about everything.

Technically:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion."

However, on Dave's the term seems to have morphed into:

"Any comment that I disagree with must be from someone who is a troll." Twisted Evil
