http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8425683.stm

Quote:
The incident took place on Saturday, as a large crowd of people were taking part in a mass snowball fight in the US capital during a blizzard.

Snowballs were thrown at the man's car and as he got out he exposed his gun briefly, always pointing towards the snow on the ground.

Panicked residents can be heard shouting, "He's got a gun," but others continue to throw snowballs his way.

At one point on the video - shown on YouTube - the man identifies himself as a "detective", but refuses to give his full name.

Then he proceeds to admit to pulling his gun.

"Yes I did because I got hit by snowballs," he tells angry residents who demand to know his badge number.

He challenges them to "throw another snowball".

The confrontation ended only when other policemen were despatched to the scene, and managed to calm everyone down.

Ms Lanier said the officer's actions "in no way, reflects the training and the standards" of the Washington DC Police Department.

She said it was disturbing that the "negative actions of one officer" had eclipsed the work of the police force during the blizzard.

Stay classy DC police!

BTW, this was in a neighborhood that has totally gentrified and is full of yuppies (I live a 10-15 minute walk up the street). 15 years ago it was pretty sketchy. Maybe he misses the old days?

It would seem the detective has not been keeping up on his history lessons, or he would know that guns and snowballs do not make a good mix.

King Street, Boston, Mass. March 5, 1770
"The crowd continued to harass the soldiers and began to throw snow balls.... Private Hugh Montgomery was struck down.... When he recovered to his feet, he fired his musket....However, the protesters in the crowd were taunting the soldiers by yelling "Fire". There was a pause of indefinite length; the soldiers then fired into the crowd. Their uneven bursts hit eleven men...."

The guy is riding around in his hummer and when it gets hit by snowballs. He pulls his gun from his holster when there is no threat. Later, he challenges the crowd to "throw another snowball." He then pulls a guy out of the crowd.

The policeman's behavior is shocking.

Great video. Unbelievable. Snow in Washington makes people a little crazy.

I am interested in how the racial angle would have been played if the cop was white and the kids throwing the snowballs were black. My gut feeling is that the incident would have been interpreted by the liberals as a racist white cop oppressing African Americans as in the recent Gates case in Cambridge, Mass.

Maybe President Obama would have thrown in his two cents worth again and maybe would have had an egg nog summit this time around.

It was the opposite this time, however. The kids throwing the snow were white and the cop was black. Can it be seen as a racial incident? I would be interested in hearing from the liberals out there. Afterall, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. No?

I think the fact that it's not being played up as a racist incident despite a black cop and white kids says a lot, given as you say a white cop doing this to black kids would be a racist outrage in the eyes of many. Just another example of blacks being beyond reproach on the matter of racism; the same (admittedly totally unreasonable) standards do not apply.

Mind you, I'm not saying this was racism; it wasn't, it was just a cop being stupid. At the same time, if the kids were black and the cop was white, it still wouldn't have been racism, it just would have been played up as such.

If this had been a white cop and black college students, Obama would have been all over it as well as Sharpton, Jackson, and every other race baiter.

I hate DC metro police.

Soon after 9-11, when major transportation was under heavy security, they had DC SWAT officers at the metro stations and riding in the train.

There was this woman and her 5 year old son. He was eating some Mcdonald's French Fries on the Metro. The SWAT guy goes up to the woman. He looks extremely intimidating holding his police issue M-16 with both hands (not pointing at anyone but still firmly grasping it with both hands) and tells the woman she needs to get off the METRO with her son ASAP unless he stops eating the French Fries.

What a #@%.

Few things reinforce my libertarianism more than interacting with government security types. They took my metal razor at the airport last week. Now I have to tear up my face with a bloody bic until a new one arrives. Kids can't eat fries? A man can't travel with a proper shaving utensil? What's the world coming to. Next you're going to tell me they shoot the family dog during stupid no-knock raids.

The climate in the U.S. : Nothing to see here, move along....

I worry about the future, but most here in the U.S. seem to not want to delve too deeply into where things are headed.

I just bought tickets for my wife and I to return to Korea in the spring. I love America, but right now it doesn't have the same vibe as I'd remembered. Some of the fire has been kicked out of its belly, if you know what I mean. Sad, but hopefully temporary.

I sound a little like Glen Beck here. Yeesh.

The little traitor should've been eating Freedom Fries. Only al Qaeda operatives and their most fanatical sympathizers eat French Fries in the post 9/11 era. He was clearly a terrorist and a danger to the patriots/heroes riding the METRO.

There are preciously few if any places I'd rather be. I can't stand flying in the US though.

That said, have you see the full body scanners the TSA uses now? Every time my better half is asked to stand in one (I've never been asked, she always is) I get livid. Call me conservative or traditionalist. Yeah, a 20-something girl in a tank top needs a full body scan that sees under her attire. Sure. I hope the GED douche enjoys his peepshow.

that'd be an interesting job.

What I don't get about the original article is; if a private citizen drew his gun like that, would he not be arrested?

I wish the US and UK would allow passengers the option of either getting a patdown or stripping butt naked. The other day, I was singled out for a screening at London Gatwick and I really don't know why so much touching and feeling was going on when I had on only a T-shirt, pants, and two socks. I would rather just strip naked, really. So what if people see me naked? That would be natural, as opposed to some goofy agent reaching his hand down my pants feeling of my butt and genitals. Laughing
