Can anyone recommend a good novel for adult students? Something more for an upper level or advanced student, but not too hard??? thanks

Novels written for native speakers are too hard. Try graded readers, they're the way to go - if you want your students to read for pleasure.

I agree that novels are too difficult. And too long.

I teach very bright intermediate/upper intermediate adults (ave age: 27)

I use short stories and essays with my students, but there are 10-15 new words per page. That's too many if you expect the students to get any pleasure out of reading. What I do that helps somewhat is to break the story into about 15 sections and deal with the vocabulary in one class, assign the reading for homework, then do discussion in a second class. It's moderately successful.

I'd like some information on a guided reader book with topics/themes appropriate for young adult males.

Hemingway's very punch style is good for second language students.
Try Old Man and the Sea. - also good to get a book that has a movie version. If the student watches the movie first, they have a lot of context which they can use to grasp the meaning.

There are also lots of abridged versions of books that are appropriate.

Thanks for your responses...what are graded readers? Are those the books that are abridged from the "real" books?

Also - where do you find the essays and/or short stories?
Thanks!!!

Graded reader series do contain second language versions of novels written for native speakers - but there are also lots of graded reader stories writen especially for a second language reading audience - check out any bookstore.

I currently work for an online bookstore and I've noticed a lot of good esl titles amongst our stacks. We sell through our own name (textbooksrus) and through amazon. You can probably find an anthology of short stories targeted to the needs of esl students, but it's been too long of a day for me to come up with something specific, we are in our busy season. I do think that your students will feel more successful if you keep their goals challenging, but modest in length...not because I got to do great things with my learners in Korea, but because I've been teaching friends to knit. Big needles, plus thick yarn equal success!

First find out the range of words your students know. Then go to the Extensive Reading Foundation site:

They have a graded reader scale. I'm using it to make a literacy program at my school. Very, very, helpful.

Here is another site.

http://bookwizard.scholastic.com/tbw/homePage.do

Enter a book that is the correct level for your student and it will find other books at that level. You can also search by Lexile code, or by student grade. You can also sort by interest.

Of course you then have to get the book(s). but that is what Amazon is for. Wink
