Do Hapkido practitioners learn grappling?

The reason I asked is because I wrestled in H.S. for 4 years. In addition I did Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for six months.

When I came to Korea I went to a Hapkido studio and dismantled the black belt instructor with ease.

I choked him from standing a few times times and on the ground a few more times. I am not saying that I am Billy Badaxx, but he had no answer for my techniques. I was interested in seeing effective techniques, but I was unimpressed because I did not see any. They were, however, interested in showing me how they could jump through the air over their partners and land safely.

The emphasis seemed to be on looking flashy instead of developing really good fighting techniques.

My point... appearance over substance is a waste (for me).

Turning to Judo...

I trained with some Korean Judo guys and they were much better at applying good techniques from standing. In addition, they were surprised by the BJJ ground game and expressed interest in learning.

Are there many Judo schools here?

In Korea there are "many" judo schools...well, compared to finding Karate schools. There are usually judo clubs at universities, maybe you'll be able to join them (though they are usually cheeky). Hapkido, as stated, well...it's hit or miss. I suggest finding a school near a university, as if you've read what I wrote about for TKD, HKD schools follow the same situation. Succintly, going to a school near a university increases the possibility that there'll be university 'kids' attending classes in HKD in order to get their dan certificates (for police/phys. ed./ROTC)...and the lessons may cater to your needs moreso than others....

PS: "Thomas" (user name on Dave's and MAP) practiced in HKD more than I, so will be able to offer more input....as he attended a couple different schools, and found great differences.
