I can't really prove how much business English had to do with this deal but I can't picture Koreans speaking Arabic and vice versa.

A South Korean consortium won a $40bn deal to build and operate four nuclear reactors for the UAE, beating US and French rivals to one of the Middle East's biggest ever energy contracts.

Under the deal announced on Sunday, the first nuclear plant in the Gulf Arab region is scheduled to start supplying power to the UAE grid in 2017.

"This deal is the largest mega-project in Korean history," said a statement from the South Korean president's office.

Why is this in General Discussion and not Current Events?

I met a Korean guy in Jordan last year. He spoke pretty awesome Arabic, but almost no English. Turns out Arabic had been his major in Uni, and he was now travelling during his school break at a school in (I think) Saudi Arabia. It was cool. At one point we were trying to figure out transportation options from Wadi Rum, and so he asked in Arabic, translated to me in Korean, and I then translated into English for the others. It was odd. The Jordanians got a huge kick out of it, too. Smile

Either way, whether they did this in Arabic or English, great for SK.

The are a few aspects about the story, I was more inclined to discuss it as a general discussion because of the business it will generate or has generated for the ESL community. It certainly is a current event albeit not too topical.
Feel free to post it over there and then develop a thoughtful discussion.

This deal was done by major international companies comprised of world-players like Korea Electric & Power Co., Doosan Heavy Industries, Westinghouse, Toshiba... said consortium conducted negoatiations with UAE government sponsored electric company... all business was done in English, mostly by well educated senior management officials and attorneys... so yeah, in all probability no "business English" *lol*

not sure about that, but you bring up an interesting point... best start thinking of renewable energy sources (ahem... USA) when the Middle Eastern countries are now contemplating nuclear power for electricity generation purposes!

My sister lives in Abu Dhabi and says everyone at least "sort of" speaks English as a lot of professionals are brought in from other countries. She speaks no Arabic and manages to do more than I ever have in Korea (buy a car, get a credit card etc).

Plenty of sunshine. I know they're producing solar panels in Mozambique. It actually started as a cottage industry by village women.

Imakemyselflaugh, caution your sister to watch her credit. They are VERY unforgiven of debtors there.

Way to win low bid.

One thing you can count on, there's gonna be good jobs for managers, welders, and x-ray techs with this job. The rest of it will probably be slave labor from Indonesia and thereabouts.

This will be a nice boost for the Korean economy though. The engineers will be sending loads of money home to their wives to spend educating Jr. School's will have security and who the heck cares if Saudi's have nukleal capability. Guess Iran can have some too now, eh? Time to put these construction engineers, electrical, nuclear, environmental, engineers to work. Been educating them long enough.

Is there an international agency that needs to approve these projects? I wouldn't think anyone would dare try to tell one country what another can build on it's own soil? Having Ban Ki-moon as UN head should keep their nose out of it. Or, in other words, don't count your chickens...

Actually, the Saudis are hunting for nuclear power plants. I saw a group of Saudis in Wolseong visiting the nuclear power facility there. Wahabis with nuclear technology is rather frightening.
