Just how binding are these? I signed one, it basically had my contract dates and salary, about two weeks ago. Am still waiting for my contract, and am a bit miffed that I haven't gotten it. IN the meantime, I've had two more job offers. Am I stuck?

Did you submit paperwork for the visa?

As long as your visa (E2) is not official or in the process of becoming official you have more options to opt out.

However, to be fair with your new soon to be employer, if you intend to back out do it as soon as possible because they are probably planning their school woak load with you on the roster. Tossing out at the last second is a bad way to do things....

NOpe, no paperwork. Don't even have the contract. Though after thinking about it, I think that I'll just stick it out though.

Maybe send an e-mail politely reminding them you are still waiting for the contract etc?
Koreans aren't known for there forward planning. Leaving everything till the last minute is common.

I can't think of any country in which good faith agreements would be better honoured.

i would just give them a deadline. two weeks seems too long. be polite, but firm. explain you are not sure what is going on and have other jobs waiting. i would make it a short deadline, like 4 days. that is reasonable.

Yep, me too. You can certainly take a Korean for their word. It is important for them to be viewed as honest in other countries around the world.

Seriously, if you don't hear back in a week go for something else. It's their own fault for not getting their act together.

In that case, I'd start looking at other options.
Tis their loss for not keeping you in the loop!

naturegirl,

What is your planned start date at the school?

The school may be considering this with the time they allow to process your employment papers....

1 March, but I arrive a week ahead of time. I know . . it's two months, but I've got an intl move in the middle, PLUS my husband's visa to worry about. Supposedly, I'm applying in Peru and I leave in 36 days.

March 1st is a long time away.

This sounds oike your employer is working along normal time lines. They should normally process your visa in late January. They cannot issue the E2 too far before your start date (I forget how much time before) but mostly why would they hurry since you are hired to start work over two months from now?

Also, and not to be cold, but your husbands visa issue is not the schools concern. They could help you out by speeding up the process and might do that if asked to professionally.

Make your case with them like you said (email or call) but this certainly is not unreasonable from the employer. Those that advise you to toss an ultimatum at the school are way off here. They however did not know your start date...

We need to be careful about passing judgement on a situation when we do not have COMPLETE information.

Good luck anyway naturegirl.

I understand that visas are issued for a max of 90 days ahead of time. But I would like my contract at least. I mean, you figure I get my contract and send it. That takes a week, or two for them to get it. Then another week or two for them to start processing the visa. That takes us to late Jan, when I would apply for my visa.

Right now they can't even start processing my visa, since they have NONE of my docs.

Basic visa processing takes about 3 weeks, so to them, late Jan is right on schedule.

So far all they are doing is working along normal lines of employment and visa processing.
