Hi,
I want to buy some Lonely Planet guides for countries/cities such as the Philippines, Kathmandu, Sidney, Fiji and China --- does anyone know of any bookstores in Seoul that sell these for a good price?
Thanks! |

Check the Korean online stores: www.kyobobook.co.kr and www.yes24.com. I've bought all my travel guides on there and they are almost always a lot cheaper than the regular bookstores, such as What the Book, and they'll always arrive within 2/3 days. Just look and compare prices. You'll need a Korean friend or coteacher to help you order them though as its mostly in Korean. |

Go to "What the Book" Bookstore . Its on the street going south from Itaewanno across the street from that big hotel I think Halmilton Hotel. They have a good used selection and there new selections are at a good price. |

I still just order from amazon.com, shipping prices are reasonable, and amazon books are usually 10-30% off the cover price.
If you want to buy them here in Seoul though, Bandi and Luni bookstore at COEX mall has a huge selection of LP books. |

Bandi and Luni's Bookstore in the basement of Jongno tower - Jonggak Station, direct access from the station.
They have a pretty complete selection of Lonely Planets. They're all wrapped in plastic but if you ask they will unwrap them for you - I've sat on the floor reading one and no one said anything to me. |

On several occasions I have seen Used Australia Lonely Planets at "What the Book" all in new shape. If you're in the area you might want to check up on what they have. They sell the used LPs for 13000 Won. |

The Korea Tourism Organization has a library in the KTO building and dozens of LP books that can be copied from. |

Do yourself a favor and don't bother with Lonely Planet guides. They are incomplete, the information is at least 2 years old, AND there's nothing worse than walking into a place only to see 20 different backpackers all with the same guide book as you. You'll end up staying in the same hotels/hostels , eating at the same restaurants, etc. You might as well go on a package tour.
Just my two cents... |

I agree. I used to buy them and also stopped.
Instead, now I just open a Word document and cut and paste current information that I find online. I print out what I need as I move along in my travels. Much lighter and easier to travel with. I've left a couple of LP guides in hotel rooms during my travels because they were a pain to pack around. |

The books do tend to be boat anchors. It sounds a little geeky, but I photocopy the pages I need and throw them out as time goes on in my vacation to keep my suitcase light.
I think that the LP books offer good advice and suggestions, but yes, don't be a slave to them. Look at the Thorn Tree forum, go to other websites, and ask us sages on the Travel forum as well. And wing it sometimes. |
