Anyone else have to give a "deskwarming" schedule. My co-teacher just told me that the days I would be "deskwarming" I should be doing "work." She asked me to make a schedule of the tasks I would complete while doing it. I just put in lesson planning for everyday. Anyone else have to do this?

What did you write???

I'm with GEPIK by the way.

I was informed that I am expected to make lesson plans, organize the school computer, and write two papers about English Ed.

But it isn't very likely going to happen Laughing

Tiger - Yeah it's standard practice for GEPIK teachers. I was just asked to write a page about things I wanted to study, etc during the break. It's required but your co-teacher knows that you will just be playing solitaire for 8 hours a day.

If in Gepik, why not ask for home study?
My handler teacher says teachers can ask for up to 2 weeks per year of home study.

Nobby - long story, but thanks to some idiot teachers, nobody in GEPIK can do home study anymore.....at all.

Apparently some FT's were bragging about getting more home study than allowed. Started some kind of chain reaction and GEPIK had to put a stop to all home study...I feel like I'm in high school again.

I'm with Epik but I have to do the same. Write down what I did, if I arrived early or late, blah blah. I'm 99% sure no one is reading it.

My handler has a book she calls "Mr Gepik". Korean teachers only get 21 days vacation, and spend the rest doing home study. My handler led me to believe it was 2 weeks for everyone.
I tried to use 7 unused days from my annual leave (I got 10 extra week-days, for renewing). The Principal granted me 7 days home study. I'm still try to get my annual leave, though the contract allows a once only carry-over of 7 days into next years contract (Article 12.1 of the Gepik contract).

7 days annual leave + 7 days home study approved.
If you don't ask, you don't get.
Teachers renewed with Gepik have to watch that their bonus days are recognised by their schools is the lesson learned.

I'm an EPIK vet from Taegu, '96-'98 and I still can't believe they're playing these games. However, at least I used to get the summer/winter vacations off.

Actually, what they seem to be doing is ramping up the same BS they did back in 1997-8 and making people quit in droves. I expect EPIK hiring and job slots to be dramatically cut in the next year or so when the bad economy comes to Asia and Korea has to increase social spending. I also think the "golden age" of teaching ESL here (if there ever was one for Korea!) are coming to a close very soon.

Hey, Palladium! Thanks for the input. I left Korea in summer '98 after finishing my contract. The last meeting we had with the board was hilarious. It was the 'contract signing' meeting and it was made clear to us that our vacation was being reduced from 30 days to 14. Also, they said we would be traveling to other schools to teach if we weren't maxing out our 25 hours at our assigned schools. One person asked if it weren't enough that our salaries were of less value now and the board's attitude was, Who cares! That day, 51 teachers attended the meeting but only nine renewed. And, the board officials had the audacity to be shocked.

Anyway, I hope this posting wasn't too negative. A poster on one of the other forums accused me of having an agenda because I was warning a newbie not to go to Korea. Free speech is a beautiful thing, isn't it?

I'm with SMOE. They require us to write a 1 page paper for every week that we don't "teach". Suppose to write about teaching methods and how we are applying it to our classes. Best thing to do is to write what you've already know and make it sound like it's all new to you.

Do you do this while desk warming or during you 'home study' time?

Sadu - I keed not.

I do this during my "home study" time which isn't really home study at all. They won't allow me to go home and I only need to do this when classes are in session and I don't teach (the last 2 weeks of classes for Dec and whole month of Feb). Not sure if that counts as deskwarming, but anytime I don't teach and have to write a paper sucks. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not complaining. I'd rather write a one page paper than teach 22 classes. Up next is Krashen's i+1 theory. keke
