Im looking at hitting the Angkor Wat/Siem Reap for three days on my way home as it has been on my mind for sometime. Im hoping i can get a trip from here to Siam Reap, then return to New Zealand.
Its looking rediculously cheap!
Hotels are like 20 U.S...
Travel is a few dollars...
Are these estimates realistic? How much did you spend there??? Are there alot of people trying to rip you off like in Thailand and China?? (i hate that)
How much were your tickets from Korea?? |

man 20 dollars a night and you will be living like a king. most hostels you can stay at for around 10 dollars or less if you are by yourself. i always had someone with me and we paid about 12 dollars a night total all around cambodia. travel withing the country is really cheap. i think you can bus from siem reap to phnom penh for like 6-7 dollars on the regular bus. its not with the upgrade and the 4 extra dollars for the 'foreigner' bus. same buses, same amount of time, double the money. angkor is the most expensive thing you will do. a 3 day pass is like 40 bucks or 20 bucks for a day pass. if you are by yourself you can hire a moto driver for really cheap in siem reap for the temples, or a tuk-tuk type deal for around 10-12 i'd say, depending on if you do the 'big-loop' or 'small-loop' for the temples. poeple arent really trying to rip you off, but you need to bargain with them. its a very poor country though with lots of child beggars. food again is really cheap. you can eat at the tourist restaurants for around 5 dollars a meal, or local joints for 1-2 dollars. beers about a dollar or so. i have never flown into cambodia, so i dont know the prices, but you can get there from bangkok cheap. 6 dollars for the train from bangkok to the border, then split the 'taxi' ride with three or four people into siem reap. about 20 bucks a car.

they always use american dollars. they only use riel when they have to give you change. 4000 riel is 1 dollar. so 1000 is a quarter. in siem reap i have stayed at the rosy guesthouse and another place i cant remember the name of. it had an alligator or crocodile farm out back. it was really nice and cheap. you will be ok without reservations there. always good places to find. in pp i have stayed a lot of places and i dont remember there names. you can just get off the bus and so many people will be offering you deals to different places. just bargain and go take a look. you dont have to stay if you dont like it.

don't bother with a $20USD a night room... cause you probably won't meet anyone. Instead go to Garden Village in Siem Reap. A great guest house for a few dollars a night and you can meet lots of other cool backpackers.. if that's yo thang.

Just make sure that all of your money is in perfect condition when you are in Cambodia, if it is ripped or has staple holes or is too old they probably won't take it, so make sure you only get pristine bills when you change your money.

I found Cambodia to be more expensive than Thailand tbh. Not by much, but I was expecting it to be really cheap, and it wasn't. There are ripoffs as well, mainly just the usual falang prices thing. Beware the urchins at Angkor Wat trying to sell you postcards and bracelets. If they spot any weakness they will hone in and permanently attach themselves to you...

In fact, the ATMs only shell out USDs. For the local riel you need to go to an exchange...
