Geez, what is up with these parents? They constantly call and complain about shit that is well out of their bounds. Like "oh, my kid is an idiot, and he feels that the stuff you are doing is too hard Sad so could you slow down to one page per week? How can you pick on my poor, suffering Korean child, by asking him to progress? You are a monster, just like all the Americans in Iraq. Why are you marking the book up when they make mistakes? Stop it. Now, why AREN'T you marking the book when they make mistakes? The Parents want this, the Parents want that. I know that my particular bosses keep most of the stuff to themselves and spare us, but some of it is ridiculous!

it's an indirect relationship...

the parents rule the director and the director rules me. But in the end, the parents rule me.

i feel your pain.

Apparently a bunch of parents have complained about me. But the Director won't talk to me about it, to explain what the specific complaints are so I can correct them if they're legitimate. Instead they're just secretly thinking about firing me.

Ahh parents of today...as a teacher who has worked both here and back home I can honestly say that parents the world over can be giant pains when it comes to their kids.

That's the nature of the beast in the hagwon industry... from what I can discern, there's just a lot less trust of the private academies than a public school system. If the parents complain, there's a good chance something will get changed.

It doesn't rule my life, just my working life. It causes frustrations, for example the class of 11 year olds who don't know the simplest phonic sounds but we're not allowed to go back and teach it to them. The parents want the "balli balli" approach which means two pages a day, homework, and tests every month. The kids memorize by rote but they can't read in English.

Things like that are frustrating but you can't reverse a waterfall, i.e change the Korean school system. You just have to suck it up.

Parents pay the money so they think they have a right to complain.

It SUCKS.

That's the sort of situation where you say "yes, Director I'll do exactly that!" and then change absolutely nothing about your teaching, only way to maintain your sanity.

When you put it that way i can see the logic why they complain. They put their hard earned dollars down on something, if they are not happy of course they are going to complain.

I'm lucky. I have complete automony has to how fast and what I teach. I'm teaching English Time series and do a page a day. THe kids are learning it fairly well too. which is the important. NO complaints that I know about. There are some downsides to my job, but being able to do what i want in regards to teaching really help make up for them.

Well yeah, if there's something really wrong then they have the right to complain. But I think it's safe to say that even your average backpacking teacher knows better how to get the kids to speak English than the parents. And if the parents have lived overseas or studied English themselves then they should be teaching the kids themselves and saving their money.

We wouldn't walk into a dentist's office and tell him which instruments to use on our teeth, how much time to take, how exactly to go about it, now would we?

The parents' complaints wouldn't be such a problem in the directors actually had a coherent plan when it came to teaching the students. Instead, they are constantly reacting to the most recent contradictory and counterproductive complaint.

How is that????

So let me guess the director went out and bought a 70 seater but then somebody complained it was too big and it was blocking up the roads......

so then the director bought 5 individual vans but then a parent complained because there was no interactivity between the students as this is the time they speak english.......

so the director went and got a 30 seater that had an english teacher on it the whole time but one parent got angry because little Su Mi needs time off in between classes to sleep...................ad nauseum. Rolling Eyes
