I just got a strange 1000won bill from the Dominos delivery guy...i looked it up and it appears to be a 1000won bill issued back in 1983. The bill itself was crisp and looked quite new...do you think this is a counterfeited bill? I heard they went through a period of time where bills where heavily counterfeited...

isn't that just the same as the 1,000 bills that were used a year or two ago before the new bills came out? All of the new bills were made fairly recently. I wouldn't worry about it.

I've gotten a couple old 5,000 W bills and I think one old 10,000W bill. It happens from time to time...he might be carrying change from someone who raided their piggy bank.

Ha ha. That bill does not look strange to me at all. It was what the 1,000 Won bill looked like for the majority of my time here. The old bills disappeared out of circulation pretty quickly after the new ones came out a couple of years ago. It should not be surprising if the odd one pops up now and again.

Still legal tender. Just mainly out of circulation.

I have one of those bills too, in mint condition. I remember my Mom handing me crisp 1000, 5000, and 10000 bills a few years back before the bills changed. I remember reading an article about a big rush to get the old bills before the new ones were put into circulation... Sadly I gave the 5K and 10K bills away to a friend.

I'm amazed at the speed that they worked the old bills out of the system. It took a matter of weeks before it was hard to find the old bills. I thought they would have let good conditioned old bills stay in the system until they got worn out.

Hang on to that. It might become collectible.

I have an old 500 won note (part of the loot my old boss in the states gave me before I left for Korea) in my wallet that is always good as a conversation piece.

I have several of the rose colored 1000 won notes somewhere. I'll have to dig them out. I remember when they were phasing them out. There is rather large rose colored ones and the smaller version of them. I have also the larger one. I collect these things. I made sure to get a couple of the old 5,000 won notes. I like those. The older 5,000 and 1,000 notes look more interesting than the new ones, IMHO. I think the newer ones are too small. I also happen to have a very old 5,000 won note from the 1970s. It's pretty old. I should scan some of these things. I don't have an old 10,000 won note. Anyone have the 500 won notes?

I saw it at the Korean mint in Daejeon. It has Yi Sun shin and a turtle ship on it.
