I had originally been expecting to start a job at the end of January or early February, and had sent my papers, but I have been told this morning to go to the embassy, be interviewed, and get my visa in order to fly out this Saturday. It was a bolt from the blue, there was no hint at all that they were considering setting me up for a different job at such short notice.

The job is for a completely different school, and I have been given the visa number without having seen any details at all about this job. I did a search for the name and cannot find any details.

It's caught me completely on the hop, it was only last week that I was being told I'd be starting later in February.

What I want to ask is this- what would you do?

Sure, I'll PM you with specific names and places.

- oh wait, I have not made enough posts to be able to send a PM.

I don't know that there is a rule against giving such details on Dave's. If people have bad reports they can PM you back. You might at least give the city name and maybe we can give encouragement or warnings. But why have you been a member for a year!

I will only say that my first job in Korea was also very short notice, and hiring decisions (and unfortunately most decisions here) tend to be done totally on the fly. By itself it is not a red flag.

Yeah the job is in Gunsan, and a at chain academy.

My account on dave's is a leftover from my previous time in Korea, but it was fairly uneventful so I never really had much to post about, either generally or work-related.

That is surprising that they used your documents to get you a visa at a school you didn't know about. I was under the impression they needed a contract signed by you to get the issuance number.

You have either applied in general to a chain franchise and been allocated to a school in the franchise or you have been given a successful 'bait and switch' and got placed in another school. Either way your recruiter has tied you completely to this job for a minimum of 90 days. Once you have been given a visa number from immigration it does not expire for 90 days thus stopping you from then sending your papers to another job.

Im not sure how you are going to extracte yourself from this position you have been put into. You cannot get your papers back now and you will have to do a completely new CRC and set of papers for a different job.
Seems you really do need to get a full explanation of waht happened, why the change of date to be earlier and why the change of schools without you knowing. My advice is not to accept the recruiters story only on the change and ask to get communication directly to the Gunsan school or a previous teacher at it.

Get a new passport, change the name order slightly, and maybe you can get another visa.

Sounds like a bait and switch.

Who's your recruiter? Name and company?

As a small aside, Gunsan is an awful, awful place filled with nothing but miserable memories.

You have every right to be upset with your recruiter. You should exercise that right.
