Well as luck would have it I keep getting the "undreadable disk" error 5-10 times before a game finally works, making it VERY frustrating. I have an unmodded Xbox 360 which is lightly used, which pisses me off because it's not like I play it hours upon hours each day. Tops 2-3 hours a WEEK! since I'm married with 2 kids there just isn't enough time anymore.

Anyway I'm probably going to buy a new (that's another pain in the a$$ as I specifically need a U.S. xbox as I have the region locked NHL series from EA Sports) xbox but I thought I'd perhaps look into getting it repaired. It is now out of warranty so I'm thinking it would be quite a hassle and costly to get it repaired. Considering all I need is an arcade version (going for $199 back in the States) cause I have the controllers and hardrive and games, I wonder if it is worth getting it repaired? Has anyone had any luck getting a U.S. one repaired here? On a sidenote I had the 3rrod 1.5 years ago, had to ship it to Japan but had it back within a week. I don't know if the jerks just gave me a refurb or actually fixed my original one. Really disappointing as I enjoy playing NHL, and numerous other games that I have. If anyone has any info. advice, suggestions I would be most appreciative.

I feel your pain, my U.S Xbox went belly up 3 days ago. Its not a RROD (although I've had 2 in the past) but it randomly freezes with jagged vertical lines, Im thinking a blown video card (its an elite btw, so much for no more hardware issues. Ive been told dealers in the video game alley at the electronics market can fix US xbox hardware issues. If only the roads were better Id make the trek to Yonsan

I just had my KOREAN one repaired. It was failing for about a six-month period...finally failed repeatedly. It cost me 50,000, with only a one-month guarantee. The shop told me that because it was modded that that was why they could only guarantee it for one month. I didn't ask what the case would've been if it wasn't modded. Perhaps it would've been covered under the newer three-year warantees that M$ was supposed to be offering? Don't know. Anyway, it is already two-years old, so I figured no problem. So far, so good. Sounds much smoother than I ever recalled it sounding, so maybe they did a good job?

From the research I've done, you can probably fix it yourself. Apparently, most RRoDs are due to heat that warps the motherboard(supposedly even with newer boxes). The thing is, it doesn't look that easy, and you'll likely pay nearly 50,000 to get all the necessary parts to fix it...I have a bit of electronics engineer tech experience and I didn't feel like going there.

Here's a couple of links for you(I still recommend bringing it in and asking them to fix it...if no part-swapping is needed, it should easily be possible and you shouldn't be expected to pay any more than I did. My US one is still working wonderfully, and is NOT for sale Wink )...

Not sure about the second link. Scam maybe? Fix it in ONLY ONE HOUR by going to Wal*mart and buying a new one !!!

Part of me is tempted to go to Yongsan to see what can be done. However the power source is different for the U.S. xbox and simply switching the cord would fry it I'm sure, so that would mean either:
1) Me lugging the big step-down converter I have (easily 5 kg)
2) Hoping they have one or know how to start up my 360 without frying it.

Not sure what to do. Someone has offered to switch out the dvd drive with one that he has but I'm just not sure if that would work, as would an Asian dvd drive work in a U.S. xbox cause the games are region locked and the drive reads the disks, hence my hesitation.

I recommend bringing it with at least your cord attached...I think they'll get the hint when the square peg don't fit in the round hole! Maybe not, though...

I also don't think that it's solely(if at all) the dvd drive. Regardless, swapping is all about the keys...

Yes it can be done. Pretty simple actually. You need to use a homebrew hacking program like 'jungleflasher' to get the orginal dvd drive key. Then once u have that key you put the replacement dvd drive in and 'spoof' that drive with the key from the original drive. its not a difficult process but u gotta know what your doing. not something i would reccomend to a novice.

i have actually modded other people's xbox 360s using remote access software (teamviewer) which is great because they dont need to have the xbox 360 at my place.. of course they will need to open their 360 up and cable the dvd drive to their computer.. but in your case i'd have to swap drives and go through the process, not to mention yours runs on a different power source.

All of this sounds great and that it might work but I worry that eventually it will get me banned from Xbox Live. As mentioned before I've gone the modding route in the past but don't want to risk it anymore as Live is too fun in my opinion to give up bricking a console. This method has the risk of getting banned I believe. It probably is just cheaper and less hassle to get a new U.S. xbox 360, just the arcade version is all I need really. For $199 U.S. I guess I'll just do that.

Thanks though for the advice. I still am tempted to take it Yongsan, but I wonder if they would be able to fix it. Oh well..............

In that case you should just buy a new one Smile

Well I just realized that with the new dashboard that you can install a games to your harddrive, cutting down on the amount your disk drive has to work. It took 3 tries but I got my NHL 2010 game installed and now works like a charm. Perhaps this is my short term fix. Of course I've only got a 20 gb hard drive so I'll only be able to be a few games on there, but oh well it conceivably cut down on the "unrecognized disk error" which would be great.

My American Xbox just suffered from an E-74. I sent off an email to the Korean branch of Xbox support today. Anyone sent in an American Xbox to the Korean branch?

Well in your case (since yours is an American one like mine) good news and bad news.
Good news (if it's still in warranty) is that the phone number (only works from a cell phone for some reason, do a search on here, there actually is an option for English, in fact I had a nice fluent English speaker.
Bad news is that because its an American console I had to ship it to Japan on my dime. No biggie, remember it was under 20 000 won to an address that she provided. More good news is that I had it within 1 week, I kid you not. I asked why I could not just send it to one of the service centers here but she said due to it being a U.S. xbox that was my only option. Better than the tech support I talked with in the states who was telling me I'd have to mail it back there!

Pretty sure that was it off the top of my head, yeah. Again I was amazed at the turnaround time. I mailed it on a Monday, and I had it back by Friday, I kid you not!

Can't remember the phone number, but try a search of dave's. That's how i found it. I remember that i called the korea number, they gave me the address and i believe a tracking number. i then went to the post office, cost about 18000 won to mail it and i was able to check on the website when it arrived, its status, etc.
