Hey ya’ll. I joined this Capoeira martial arts club [Capoeira Korea, simple enough] about 2 months ago to cross train for dancing and instantly fell in love. If anyone is looking to start up a new hobby or loss weight for the new year, I highly recommend signing up.
First of all, if you don't know what Capoeira is...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira
It's located in Yeoksam (the next station after Gangnam, you can walk to the studio in 10 minutes from Gangnam station) right across the street from the GS building.
The main instructor is THE nicest Korean man I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and even his name means "Happiness". The co-instructor is a guy from Texas, and they share teaching roles. There is an equal mix of foreigners and Koreans, all of which are really cool, down to Earth people. Ages range from 15 - 40, and sometimes as low as 7 [those kids are crazy amazing]. There is no sense of hierarchy or, "I'm better than you because I have been doing this longer" attitudes. Really free spirited. Class are bi-linual (tri-linual, counting the Portuguese.)
Classes run nightly from 8p - 9p, with free time starting from 7p - 8p and 9p - 10p. So essentially, you can get a 3 hours session going. Every class is a fresh and unique experience. You WILL learn something every class. Friday run at the same time but emphasize learning songs and instruments. Saturdays are 2p - 3p, and we usually do public demo 2 - 3x/month.
For the month of January only, the owner is running a 10 year anniversary special. Basically huge discounts. I saw the figures but already forgot, I'll post them later, but basically break down to 10% off for 3 months, 30% off for 6 months, and 60% off for the year.
If you want anymore info, PM me, or just ask here and I'll answer.

I did it for 5 years in my teens/early twenties then one car accident ended it all.
I completely understand why you fell in love with it. The music alone is great. That is cool that capeoira exists here in the ROK. I know it has gained in popularity in Japan. |

There is also another capoeira studio between Sinchon and Hongdae by the railroad tracks where construction is going on. |
