First, sincere condolences to the family. What ever the reason for death it is tragic and my prayers are with you.
A 27 year old Canadian died July 25th from "fan death" (according to the news on Korean TV). The link above is in Korean so maybe someone with a little better translation skills could provide an accurate account.
Apparently it was reported the teacher also suffered from asthma. I am not very good at Korean but this was passed on to me when I stated it must have been a hoax.
Here is the article:ܱ dz Ļ

Again, my deepest sympathies go out to family and friends of the deceased.

Thanks for posting that. I also extend my sympathies to the family. I'm sure they won't be satisfied with the police explination of "fan death" (the article says he died of a heart attack/heart failure brought on by the fan running a closed room. Yeah, right.) I'm NOT suggesting a Matthew Sellers style-conspiracy here, by any means. |

Apparently it says they are still trying to determine the exact cause of death. Kyopo co-worker told me this, he had asthma and died of heart failure though this is of course blamed on fan death. |

gilrofdenz on the fly translation services:
Foreign Instructor suffocated by fan
July 25th, about 11:15 am.
Foreign English instructor, Macof Caz (not sure how to spell his name in English - 27) living alone on the second floor at Han-yeongripjutaek in Mokpo was found dead by his coworker, Mr. Kim(33). Mr. Kim called the police.
Mr. Kim says, "Macof did not come to work even after his class started so I went to his place where I found him dead in bed."
Police said that Macof had asthma and slept in a closed room with the fan turned on all night. They assume he died of heart disease and are investigating the cause of death

[edit] Denz was faster.
If you are anywhere on this bright blue planet called Earth and find yourself in an enclosed environment (read room with no ventilation), DO NOT start a fire and DO NOT initiate air circulating machinery (read fan). |

i'm a teacher here in mokpo...not such a big place, so most teachers know each other. i was a little surprised that most of you missed the point that an actual human being has died...
he was a large man...asthmatic...and his room was quite small. my coworker heard from a doctor that it was related to his asthma, and not his 'fan'...
my coworkers and i were also discussing this 'fan-death' theory...but the greatest point should be that a life was lost, and he is gone. this past week, i've been thinking about how sad it is that a foreigner can die here and very few people seem to be affected by it. the school just replaces him with a new teacher...moves on...and all is forgotten.
think about it...if you died tomorrow, would you just be a topic in this thread...or would you have genuinely touched the lives of people here around you? that's what's been in my mind this week.
Kaz...may you rest in peace. |

I'm surprised you missed the sincere expressions of sympathy to his family by several posters, including myself, on the first page of this thread.
"Fan death" has been a topic of conversation here for a long time, as it symbolizes many of the challenges we face here in dealing with Korean education, unwavering belief in authority, and critical thinking. The death of our colleague, while tragic, doesn't automatically make the subject of "fan death" taboo on this board. Besides, the fan didn't kill him.
I also think it would be phony of us to pretend to be in mourning for an individual most of us don't know. |

Addendum to the TOS: Resurrecting old threads with the aim of simply trolling is verboten. If you resurrect a thread for a good reason that's different. An example would be if there was something in the news related to that, it would be very relevant to the needs of users, and is not a selfish use of the boards simply for trolling. We have no time for such abuse of the forums. We can tell the difference between trolling and resurrecting a thread for legitimate reasons and so can other veterans. |
